Don't really see the market for the 5170g getting any softer. It is very soft right now.

If I'm starting today, from zero, and am selecting models I'd actually wear:

5167 on Tropical
5711 white dial
5196 G or P (can't decide which dial I actually prefer)
5227 yellow

If I already have my 5065, the above list would still hold, but I'd go for the 5167 on a bracelet.

If I also have a time machine, and can go back and acquire watches no longer in production (I've always preferred to buy brand new) then it would be:

5165 or 5167 on Tropical
5711 white
5196 (G or P)
5111 J
5522

The 5711 white is still in production

Yes, I wasn't saying exclusively out of production models, as 5196 is also still made, I was merely saying what I'd ideally pick if both current and past models were there for the choosing.

I am lucky enough to own a fair number of Pateks...to narrow it to 4 is interesting.

5370P - best watch ever
5990 - travel beast
5270R - sometimes dressy requires some gold
5235 - I know this is a surprise but I love it and it's nice to have a piece for some whimsy

What would be your ideal 3-5 Patek collection?

Picking from a list of current production model, I would choose the following

5172g - like the fact that it's a manual wind chronograph, prefer this dial over the 5170g

5930g - nice WT with chronograph, very beautiful dial, photos don't do justice and you really need to see it in person

5164 - comfortable size for a sporty GMT and a nicely space out dial with what I feel is a perfectly sized sub dial.

5712 - alluring blue dial, loved the asymmetrical layout though I have no use for the moon phase

5990 - a beast of a watch, nicely balanced sub dials, it will certainly make its presence felt.

5712
5164
5726 (white)
5070g

or

5711 white
5726 blue
5164
5070g

That way you have 3 different dial colors!
