Trading my daytona 116500ln for vintage

I'm really thinking about trading my daytona 116500ln white dial for a vintage piece. I really like the Daytona but I am in love with the Rolex vintage charm. I currently own a GMT 16750 (birth year) matte dial with nice yellowish patina on the hands/markers. Faded inserts, probably adding a T38 crystal to it soon, blah, blah, blah. You get it. I love vintage Rolex.

Been trying to do some market research the last couple of weeks on what would be a pretty close apples to apples trade for my Daytona. I would be looking for a piece that is original with nice patina on the dial/hands and insert. I'm not concerned with box and papers. Red sub is definitely out of an even swap but probably a regular 1680 is my best bet? Am I missing a reference that I should be looking at?

Thanks for any insight.

Ryan

I'm sure your Daytona will worth just as much as a red sub. For sure it's worth more than a white sub.

I don't think you should trade your Daytona though, I suspect you'll regret. Save and buy what you want next is my opinion.

How about a Tudor Big Block? That would give you the same functionality as the Daytona, but with plenty of vintage charm. And a bunch of cash to play with.

You could also consider a Sub 5513 or a Great White within that price range. Pretty sure you might find a Red Sub too.

I too am hunting for a Daytona. Do u think it is worth to pay grey prices for the current panda model or look at either zenith Daytona or 116520?

I'd everyday trade a 6 digits dayto for a 4 digits sub/gmt/...

Thanks everyone!!!

I'm not really looking for a 1675 or another GMT as I already have a 16750. I know it isn't 100% the same but very similar looking to the 1675.

I must have misjudged the red sub market. It appears from a couple of posts that I can get a really good example in exchange for my Daytona. A white 1665 sounds awesome too. I'll explore these references more.

Have you considered a zenith Daytona? Keeps the functionality of the daytona but adds patina/vintage charm/a bit of class? I'm no expert on the various zenith iterations but would think you could get a great example of a slightly rarer variant for ceramic daytona money.

Trade it for a great early 70’s matte 5513. Those are undervalued and a great trade for your somewhat overvalued Daytona.

I would keep the Daytona, I totally understand your thoughts but White Daytona Ceramic is one of the most beautiful watch in the market nowadays.

Personally I’d trade for the best condition 5513 I could find. You should be able to get a very nice one for what ceramic Daytonas are going for.

This is the route I would take if I was sure I wouldn't miss owning a Daytona C.
Good balance with the 16750 too. One with a date, one without.

You should get a red sub. You already know you wanted it. You thought it was out of reach but it isn't.

I also think it is a very undervalued reference with a lot of subtle charm.

You would definitely be making a nice move from overvalued to undervalued piece.

Good suggestion. I'm not sure I'd describe Red Subs as undervalued, though...

I made this trade last year. While I found the white Daytona beautiful, it just didn't quite fit my (toned down) pace/style on the wrist, so I never really wore it. Traded for an original owner, super crispy white 1680 and a pile of cash. I wear the 1680 far more than I wore the Daytona, and I'd rather someone enjoy the Daytona than it sitting in my drawer.

I always wanted a Daytona, but in my bones I knew it wasn't my jam once I had it. Gotta stay true to who you are.

I wouldn't pay inflated prices for any current pieces on secondary market. A 16520 has more charm and likely stronger value retention over time.

Thanks everyone. I think I'm more interested in a red sub than a 5513. Unless it is gilt.

Coming back to this thread I started. It is funny how my preference changes overtime with my own watches. When I started this thread I was really coming down on my love of the 116500ln. But I wore it all last week and I reconnected with it. Would not consider selling or trading it.

Just proves I need to keep both watches and save for my third Rolex.

It's funny, I have a 16610 and a 1675. I wear the 16610 for a few weeks at a time and think I should sell the 1675. Then I wear the 1675 and wonder if I could make it my one watch collection. Decisions, decisions. Maybe I'll just sell them both and get an Apple Watch!

The 1665 great white with an original dome is something special to consider down the line!

Good to hear you kept it in this case! It's always better to take some weeks rather than make an impulsive decision.
If nothing changes, then you know it's time to move on.

Just like you, I am primarily into vintage as well as "Neo" vintage watches (80s-90s).
The Daytona C is the only modern Rolex I have "connected" with and own. I too had a phase where I toyed with the idea of selling it, and almost went through with it.
Fast forward some weeks of other watches in the rotation, and I fell in love with the Daytona C once again. I was so glad I didn't sell it!
There is an undeniable charm about that watch. I didn't get convinced trying it on once (especially as a guy that is almost always set on older watches/designs and proportions), but once you spend a day out and about with the DaytonaC snug to your wrists, the beauty and charm overwhelms you.

Got carried away with that post, but I am happy you didn't do something you would be regretting.

Interesting indeed. We like what we like. I've owned the white Daytona-C twice and flipped it twice. The second time I wore it for a month straight and just couldn't get into it. Too toothpaste white, unlike the old 6263s that have a little silver in the dial.

One thing to keep in mind when contemplating vintage versus modern ... good examples of vintage Rolexes are becoming harder and harder to find and for the most part are becoming more and more expensive, a trend that will continue, IMHO. (They ain't making them any more!) But modern Rolexes will always be around, and replacing them is relatively easy.

In other words, flipping a modern Rolex for a beautiful vintage might be a good move in certain circumstances. I've done it a couple of times, and the last time landed me this DRSD. I traded, in part, a white gold Daytona on Oysterflex, which is replaceable. (I did). But finding another 1665 like this would be very, very difficult.
