Christie's Online Auction

Christie's online watch auction ended a day or so ago and a 5711 blue dial from 2012 sold for $52,500.

Does that mean that the bubble is inflating or crashing? Or is this another example of the market being manipulated? I am totally confused.

I assume the price was with fees. $50,000 plus seemed like a milestone to me, but maybe I'm out of the loop.

If it went for 50k the bubble is intact.

There are several more 5711, 5712 coming up for auction in the next 30 days. My Guess is they will all go WAY over estimate of 30-40K.

Also have to keep in mind it was an online auction. They tend to perform a lot worse than regular auctions.

Unless Christie’s waived the seller’s commission or had some other kind of arrangement, the seller presumably received only mid-to-high 30s.

For ultra-desirable art I believe the auction houses often agree to waive the seller’s commission, and sometimes even to share part of the buyer’s commission with the seller. If any wristwatch could cause them to do that these days, it’s probably the steel 5711.

I doubt Christies would waive seller fees for a 5711.

The big auction houses do generally take a big chunk from both seller and buyer. The bottom line is that someone paid $52,500 from 2012. That number caught my eye!

That should have been "$52,500 for a 2012". Sorry.

Then it sounds like the buyer overpaid for a six-year old 5711 (compared to going to a dealer) but the seller got hosed even more - seems odd to offload a hot reference this way.

Yes selling via an auction house makes no sense unless you have a monumental piece that can benefit and afford a marketing campaign.

Buyer's Premium is up to 25%, a waste on such a low ticket lot.

Question: How does Christie charge for seller premium and buyer premium?

Easy they fill a room with rich people and tell them to pay.
