Does your watch have to match your clothes?

We went out to dinner with four relatives. I was wearing khaki pants and a mostly green striped short sleeve shirt (by Patagonia). I was wearing an IWC Mark XVIII watch, which has a black face and is on a black strap.

My clothing consultant said that my watch did not match my outfit. I said it doesn’t have to match my clothes. I also said that because it’s black it goes with anything.

What do the experts think? Do I have to buy a Hulk?

Four out of five of my clothing consultants agree with your one.

How are things in Patagonia?

My own opinion is that your watch must match your motorcycle.

As long as it doesn't clash it's fine. So no bright orange strap with pink shirt...

If I'm going out to dinner or family get together, I always try to wear a watch that matches what I'm wearing. Believe me, I need all the help I can get...

I try to match in more formal attire, when I’m wearing allot of blue, which usually goes with Brown, I wear a yellow/rose gold watch on a brown leather strap, grey suit goes with black/grey strap white gold.

With casual clothing I don’t really care, just a steel sports watch.

this is why its important to carry more than one watch.

the watch that matches your car may not match your office suite or the restaurant you have chosen for dinner.

I try too but not always. Such things don’t really matter. Belt should match pants FYI

I like to match my shoes/loafers to my watch strap, if it’s a steel sports watch then I don’t sweat it. If it’s a pool (I don’t dive lol) watch then swimming trunk with the rubber strap.

I’m considering a shearling strap for the winter to match my jacket

Cheaper to buy a black shirt and pants to match your existing watch!

Sometimes its nice to match the watch to the clothes (or vice versa) but sure doesn't have to...

Time for a new wardrobe consultant maybe ?

That IWC is about as unbrash and blendy as a watch could be.

I wear jeans, some shade of black t shirt and Chuck T's pretty much every day, not found a watch that doesn't work with that...

It is imperative that your clothes and watches match. All clothing consultants are obligated, under law, to report any incidence in which a client has not made a reasonable attempt to match their outfit to their watch. This citation could result in significant fines and, if the fashion faux pas is egregious enough, imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

Nope. Though - a dressier watch goes with a suit etc.
We here don't wear watches for fashion purposes

My clothing consultant cannot be fired because she has other important jobs in my administration. She has also served admirably for 33 years.

Hi there are no rules except what you want to do. For me the watch band should always match your belt and shoes. But that is me.

No, just get a nice pair of cufflinks to tie up the ensemble.

That watch with your described outfit sounds like it was an okay match. And black really does go with anything.

Personally, I generally try to match my watch with my outfit.

I think a leather straps should match leather belts and shoes, if possible. Or at least not clash. I don't worry about the watch face too much. But a bronze case looks odd next to a stainless belt buckle.
