I got a new job!

Well guys, after three years as a photographer at a portrait studio, I have taken the plunge and branched out. I landed a job as a clinical assistant for Lasik MD, a company that does eye surgeries. Great perks (like $300 towards a gym membership, score!) and a nice pay increase.

I am very excited, but at the same time extremely nervous. I've been in a rut at my current job for so long of doing nothing but reading magazines and playing on my computer while waiting for customers to come in, and I'm scared of going back to a "real" job.

The office is downtown, in a SUPER convenient location for me, with hours that are nice (though I have to leave the house by seven at the latest, as opposed to nine twenty like I do now!) and I've always wanted to work downtown. Shopping on my lunch break, hooray!

Now the only thing I'm worried about is quitting my current job... I know there is no reason to fear but I really hate any confrontations like this, and have been too chicken to do it all day. Please give me some encouraging words so that I can call my manager and tell her!!

Congrats Ashley! I am sure this is a great change for you. Go for it, you can not say you liked something or not until you try it. Best wishes.

Well, the first thing is I wouldn't call her unless it's impossible to do it in person. I would start by thanking her for all she did to support you (even if she did zero), tell her the job was fine, but that you're seeking additional challenges and feared that you shouldn't miss this new opportunity in a generally tough job market. You want leave making them feel good too. L ife is short and you never know when you may need these people for a reference etc. You know a reliable person that might like the job? Helping them solve the problem of losing you would be a nice touch if you can do it.

Congrats.

Ash, I had the LASIK surgery about 8 or 9 years ago. Wait till you see how happy all the people are on their next day checkup after the surgery.

Ashley,

Matt has some good advice. Start off on a positive note, thanking your boss for the opportunity she gave you and tell her how much you learned at this job. But you've been offered a position with a significant pay increase with additional challanges and you can't possibly turn that down. Try to leave on the best terms possible.

And good luck to you on this next great adventure.

Ashley, you know what you need to do and I would suggest not putting it off. Can you give a proper 2 week notice or does the new job start sooner? Just explain to your current boss/owner that you have been given a job opportunity with upward mobility and have decided to take the new position.

Thanks for the support, everyone! I did it, and she was very understanding and very nice. She said that she would rehire me in an instant, so it's great to know that I can always go back there.
I gave two weeks notice, so hopefully my new job can understand that. I mean, if they didn't, that would be pretty brutal. I'm sure they'd expect their employees to give two weeks notice, so they shouldn't say anything to me about it. Hopefully!
I'm so excited, and so nervous, eek!!

Congrats Ashley.

The desired outcome. Let's hope you never need to be hired "back in an instant," but that they would do it is a good thing. If you train up the new employee quickly you just might leave in a week with another week's pay.

I doubt you'll have trouble in the new job due to the two weeks notice, but if they say anything, just say you wouldn't leave them in a bind either. Two weeks of waiting is a small price to pay for a professional, considerate employee.

On to bigger things.

Congratulations, Ashley. This sounds like a great opportunity - and it's in a medical setting, which seems like a good fit for you!

Congratulations on the new job Ash.

Don't worry about quitting, I don't know any employers that worry about getting rid of staff when it suits them.

Congrats, Ashley.....well done and I do wish you the very best for your future.

You are a bright, young girl and what Ed and Matt advised above seems pretty sound to me.

Never fear about leaving your current job if you have a much better prospect in hand. And cardinal rule....

Always leave your existing job on a very pleasant note. You never know when you may need some good references from your present employer to support your Resumé for the new job.

It pays to be diplomatic all round and try and keep all fingers in the honey-pot!!

All the best from Zemina and me - JJ
