1973 1680 mk4 red or 1965 5513 gilt
Hi fellow rolex forum member.
I have the chance to buy either one since mu budget is only for one. I know its a different watch but i like both of them. I havent seen it in person because of travel restriction. I am also new to vintage rolex. The 1680 comes with 9315 bracelet but different endlink 258 and newer 93150 clasp. The 1965 5513 gilt comes with c+i 76 bracelet so both bracelet is not correct. The 1680 comes with box and paper and it say it was belong to a military hence the engraving at the back. My question is the watch come with correct insert and what do you think the condition of the dial and is it a good piece which one is better? Thanks for the help |

Are you sure that the 5513 is gilt?

The red sub all day long and near certain the 5513 is a late 60's non-gilt meters first, bezel insert on 5513 looks thin. If you get the 5513, shot me the link to that red sub.

I like the 5513 more, I would double check that dial too for condition etc.

That 5513 is beautiful and would be my preference of the two, assuming all is good with it. Tough to find matching patina like that, and the tone is stunning.
As for current pricing/value, a quick browse around the Internet should give you a good idea. |

Tough call... of the 1680 I like the fact that has paper and I like the engraving,
but I think the 5513 is a must in a collection and this one is pretty nice, even though is a "light" gilt... If you go for the 5513 I would ask for a correct insert |

hmm I think best to first decide whether you want a date or no-date sub, and then find the best example of that in your budget

I don't think I would buy a gilt anything without having it in my hands. Be careful.

The silver gilt dial 5513 is a bit of an oddity. 1680 for me, assuming that the poor photo quality isn't trying to hide anything.

Zapokee is merely saying given the photos of the 1680 is not clear, be careful that it isn't trying to hide certain imperfections that a clear shot would have picked up. I would simply ask for clearer photos.

The dial of the 5513 doesn’t look gilt to me. Do you have a serial number? The insert is also a later replacement. It should have a long 5. Maybe this is a 1966 serial and is one of the early non gilt dials?

I'm actually enjoying those scratches on the insert at 3 and 6 o'clock. A life well lived. |

I prefer the 1680 red sub with box papers and provenance, but too bad the bezel insert is scratched all to hell… Still not a show stopper though as it is quite a desirable watch…

Initially I would have gone with the 5513 regardless of the bracelet and insert..but upon further inspection I’d go w the 1680. The case of the 5513 is suspiciously perfect IMO.

The engraving on the 1680 would put me off, you’ll always be wearing somebody else’s watch.

Yeah honestly I recant my previous statement. I wouldn’t buy either without handling them either.
