Thoughts on purchase of Rolex Datejust 41

I have a small watch collection, but no Rolex models. However, I have an opportunity to buy a new Rolex Datejust 41mm with a smooth bezel on the Oyster bracelet at retail.

Although I have never seen a DJ in person, the pictures look very nice! However, I am a casual guy; and my only concern is whether or not the watch has too much bling factor? In other words, do the polished center links really stand out? Would those center links be more prone to scatches? Is the watch considered more dressy versus casual?

I do have two diver watches to include a Tudor Black bay 58 so perhaps the DJ would add something different to my collection. But, even at retail, and especially around the holidays, just wondering if I should pull the trigger and buy this watch given my questions about it?

Any suggestions or insight for a casual guy here about this watch? I realize I won't be certain until I see the watch in person and try it on. But any feedback here is appreciated.

Smooth bezel is casual and makes it closer to a dress sports model IMO. PCLs love hairlines scratches but the patina ends up looking really nice. Not sure what your blingy threshold is, but maybe an Explorer I would be better?

I think for a casual guy a date just 41 at retail would be a good buy. Try it out if you don’t like it then you can get your money back out of it. I will warn you if you are bothered by scratching like some people the smooth bezel is a scratch magnet. But if you don’t care then get it post some photos and enjoy it

The DJ smooth bezel is very versatile. Would be an excellent addition to your collection, especially at retail.

It wears like an aqua terra. Smooth bezel and oyster bracelet is similar (there are subtle differences) to an OP41 but with a cyclops date.

It’s a very versatile watch.

Fear the smooth bezel might be a scratch magnet. But if you’re ok with that then it’s a nice watch that you can dress up and down.

DJ41 smooth on Oyster would be a great buy, especially at MSRP!

What color dial? Still a great watch no matter the color I am just curious.

I think all Rolex watches are great looking. So timeless; and I've always wanted one. The problem is, most of them are not available at retail. If I had my pick, I'd probably go with a sub, but it's not an option (at retail). The DJ is my only choice (at least right now). I'll probably go for it. But those were my main concerns, whether or not it was too blingy with the polished center links and the issue of scratches. Either way, the pics of it look great. It just has to fit me. I think I'll feel more certain about it once I see it in person and try it on. I appreciate the posts here.

Great all round watch. The best imo.
Less bulky than sport models and more comfortable.

Smooth bezel is less dressy and more casual and mine is certainly not a scratch magnet.

You can change bracelets for the jubilee. Order from a dealer - but not cheap.

You may be able to change the dial for a different colour at service time too if you want.

You are spending a good amount of money, even if it is a Datejust, and do not know if you like the way it will look and feel on your wrist.
I personally like them, but prefer sports models at the 40mm size.
Can you go see if you can test fit one anywhere else in your area?
Or can you return it if you don’t like something about it?

The DJ 41 with smooth bezel and oyster bracelet is the sporty version of the DJ line, dial color and indices type also play an important role on how you want it to look and wear.

A blue dial with stick indices would be my favorite pick.

Smooth bezel isn’t really my cup of tea. You are missing out on the phenomenal reflections of fluted bezel. Those who know, know. In a plane, or in your car; if the sun strikes it you get a very special kind of reflection that is unmatched.

This is a classic timepiece, you can dress up or down and good for all occasions.

You better hurry and grab it while it is still available to you.

DateJust 41, dome bezel, on oyster bracelet is a classic, yet modern, sporty look, like a oyster perpetual with date.

Darker dials with stick hours markers are "trendy" (blue, slate, black); lighter dials are more classic (white, silver), while retaining the sporty look.

This is mine, with the white dial:PXL_20210515_110008555.jpgoriginal_32fdccba-df3e-44e5-bb63-e04ea4716ce8_PXL_20210515_114116151.MP.jpg

If you are not looking for bling the smooth bezel with oyster bracelet is perfect. Not over the top at all. The PCLs are beautiful on that bracelet. I think you would be very happy with it.

I have a DJ41 with a jubilee bracelet and fluted bezel which most people would say is dressiest version of the watch. I actually prefer to wear it with jean and a sweatshirt as it adds a little something to a casual outfit. Domed bezel on Oyster bracelet would look just fine as a casual watch, and even if you think it's too dressy, it will add a pop of class to a casual outfit.

It dresses up or down pretty well. Bottom of the clasp and the pcl do scratch relatively easily as does the bezel.

It’s pretty comfortable and is certainly well built.

It’d make a decent addition to a small collection with no Rolex

Exactly the reason why I didn't go for the fluted bezel, too bling-bling for me, but that's just me! Good luck!

As others have asked, which dial are you considering?

FWIW, I only own one DJ and it's a DJ 41 on oyster/smooth, Wimbledon dial. I would personally only buy a DJ with a smooth bezel but I like both jubilee and oyster bracelets.

The one you are considering is definitely the sportiest look for a DJ. I like it.

It's a DJ 41 on oyster/smooth with blue stick dial. it's looks like a beauty! Of course, they all do in the pictures.

But, yes, even at retail, it's still a big chunk of change, especially around the holidays. And while I make pretty good money, I don't have a money tree either, so I have to think about it being the right choice or not, particularly around Christmas when I've got other expenses.

One thing I really like about my Tudor BB 58 is the fact that it's just a nice looking, quality watch, and how well it flies under the radar! It does not scream "look at me" but it "does" scream "wear me!" And that's the best part about that particular watch. I've got the BB 58 on bracelet and it looks perfect. I never had any regrets buying it whatsoever. But we all know that's not always the case.

From comments here about the DJ, it seems others perceive it (the oyster/smooth) as certainly being the sportiest combination, although we know it's not exactly a sports watch either.

Does anyone know how expensive a replacement bracelet is (on smooth or jubilee) if I buy the DJ and then later decide for a replacement bracelet? Also, any feedback on just how difficult (or not) these DJ watches are to find at retail? Obviously, we know it's not like the sports models. That ship sailed a long time ago in the retail market.

Thanks for the comments here and those wrist shots!

The answer to that is no because of the timing. We're just a few short weeks away from Christmas and not it's not really the ideal time for me to be spending that kind of money right now.

So, for example, if it was an Omega Aqua Terra (i.e. which might be the closest watch to the DJ), I would definitely wait until it fit in my budget a bit better, and knowing that I could buy an Omega anytime.

But, the DJ is different because, although not extremely hard to get like Rolex sports watches at retail, it still seems in short supply at retail.
