What in the Daytona is this?

Hi. This is a thread about an older man (in his senior age) who lives in my city. I've gotten to know him personally, know his professional background, know where he resides, and he is an honest man from what I know of him. My point is; he is not some random person on the corner of the street. He owns a Daytona which he says he bought brand new back in the day. So he send me photos today as he is thinking of selling it. I asked him how much he paid and he said somewhere in the teens. I'm wondering if he is telling me a fib, or if this gentleman purchased a replica watch that he is still not aware of...or is it possible someone swapped the dial on him and he didn't notice? Please advice. Thanks

Perhaps when he said he paid in the teens for it he meant $13-$19.

Hahaha!

Fantastic… I would say low teens. $13 sounds about right.

Just respectfully tell him that the watch is a fake. He probably knows it and is having some fun at your expense.

It doesn't look authentic to me...let him know respectfully so he doesn't take it the wrong way.

I’m just flabbergasted that he doesn’t know there’s something wrong with what he has. And I really don’t want to question his intelligence. So I’ve found a watch store, who sells Rolex, close his house and I instructed him to take the watch there to get it appraised

"Back in the day" to me suggests the era when Daytonas sold for under 10 grand even on the grey market.

That’s what I was thinking too. I brought up this point to my wife last night as something strange. I just didn’t want to question his intelligence

I really don't know where to start about this. Considering how you've described him, he seems like an intelligent and nice person.
He probably doesn't know it's actually a fake, but then he's intelligent enough to know. It's conflicting to think about it.

Just maybe he's having a joke on you. To me, that's the possible explanation here.

I like that he’s left the modern plastic shrink wrap on the bracelet all those years, and what do those pushers even do - set a timer off that measures in days?

At least it is not another 'we found grandpa's watch' story.

Box looks real (1990s) so someone has probably tried to fool someone at some point.
