Rolex Submariner 5508

Hey guys I wanted to see if anyone could help me gather some information on my Rolex value being one I have had several offers and just want to do my research before I make a decision. This was my grandfathers he was a Navy Seal and part of the under water demolition team 13 he wore this watch in Vietnam so a lot of sentimental value and great American history behind this piece. If anyone has any information it would be greatly appreciated.

Rolex Submariner 5508

Great sentimental value, but also would be totally fine dumping it if the price is right . Prices are readily available for 5508s just google it and look at condition. Best case, maybe it’s 40-50k. Worst case it’s around 30k. Not enough money to consider selling an heirloom of that quality IMO.

If there are pictures of him wearing it while working, or caseback stamps if it was issued, that’s a big deal. Things get wild price wise with collectors.

We get a lot of grandfather posts like this asking about desirable watches. Some are legit, some are backdoor sales posts, and some are scams, so it's hard to know whether to take you seriously. Please post information and photos, tell us about your offers, etc. If the story and the watch sound legit, you will get info and advice.

But honestly, if you're just looking to sell it, take it to an auction house or contact a dealer. Newbies don't usually sell watches like this on the open market.

Looks good to me. I'd guess 58-59 in the 400k serial range. Look for comparable watches at HQ Milton.

I would keep it as a family heirloom.

Whatever you do, don't send it to rolex. Don't replace any parts, especially that dial and corroded insert and do NOT touch that case.

Can you take a photo of the dial of the watch? It looks good. The bezel looks like a replacement long 5. I can’t tell if the hands are orig. should it have a white sec hand?

Nice watch and cool story to accompany it.

Just send it to a knowledgeable independent repair place, get it running and leave it alone. Possibly some tooth paste, polywatch or diamond paste to the acrylic crystal and you are set with an amazing heirloom.

Very nice 5508. Its a warrior owned and battle worn watch with history. This adds a big premium to the value of the watch. I would not compare this to a 5508 in the same condition

Thanks guys for all of the information this has been a great learning experience on the history of this watch. I didn’t know a lot about it, I was pretty young when my grandfather passed so I have very few memories of the service stories he shared with me. I did have a conversation with a gentlemen who knew quite a bit about the secondary bracelet that is currently on it and that was really cool to vision him having this band made over seas here is a link he shared with me if anyone is unfamiliar with them. https://www.vwcltd.com/the-origins-o...apo-bracelets/

Congratulation for the amazing piece, I love the original Olongapo bracelet and the story behind, what a find!

I don't know if you spoke with Roberto or Andrea at VWC but they are both top experts on Vintage Rolexs.

Dude, keep it. Don't sell off your family heirlooms. Money comes and goes but this is a unique piece of your family history.
