Please clear this up. Is golf ok with mechanical watches or not?

I've heard many different warnings on this over the years. Generally I have heard that it's not good to wear a mechanical watch with automatic movement while playing golf. Something about the shock of striking the ball possibly damaging the rotor.

Anything to this or just old wives tale? I'm playing, or attempting to play, this afternoon. Take the SD43 or swap out to the G-Shock?

Somebody point me to some real information on this please

I think it’s fine to hit a golf ball with an automatic watch. But I was told early on after getting my first not to, and it makes me uncomfortable and distracted to play with one on. So, while I have little concern the watch would be damaged, I’m also in the “why risk it?” camp and don’t play wearing a watch. Even a quartz or Apple Watch.

I usually don't play golf with any watches or rings on. Usually put the watch in my golf bag and then put it on after the round.

I think it also depends on your swing type. If you are steep and a digger, large divots, then wearing a mechanical watch is probably a bad idea. I am shallow and take a minimal divot, so I wear mine.

It's OK

I wore a Datejust playing golf (and everything else in my life) for 30 years and an Explorer for the last ten with no noticeable ill effects, at least not on the watch; however; I'm starting look fairly worn.

Would you want to wear it boxing? Hammering nails? Chopping wood? I think the question is do you want to subject the movement to that jarring. Generally I’d say no in those cases. Think about the feeling that goes through you hand while driving a nail…..same energy goes through the watch……

Good points all around. In truth I'd rather not wear it while playing. But, I feel better with my watch on my wrist rather than left in the car or golf bag. I like to have it for after the round but maybe the best move here is to leave at home in the safe and go with the G-Shock

My AD told me it is not safe to play golf with a Rolex — as Rolex’s proprietary Oystersteel will attract lightning and electrocute you. Watch will be fine though.

Regardless, I just don't wear a watch playing golf.

Play golf two times a week for the past five years with my Rolex GMT, never ever had an issue. Wear it when I work in the yard, do building projects, yes hammer nails, no issues. Does it get scratched and dinged, yep.

I personally don't like the added weight weight on my wrist, I wear a Garmin. Phil Mickelson uses a Rolex almost every round so I'm assuming it's fine.

i've never thought to myself that hitting a golfball was a high impact. flex in the ball, the club face, the shaft...i've also never come across anyone long-time players that have suffered issues due to repeated high-impact stress. unless you're practicing on artificial grass that's thin and sitting on top of a concrete slab, I don't see the issue.

that said, the first time i ever touched a rolex is when one was left in a cart that i was cleaning out.

Ditto to all. Im not worried about the watch being damaged.

Personal preference is to remove my watch as I feel it is distracting.

Phil wears a manual wind Cellini I believe. The issues with golf and shock are specific to automatic models from what I've heard.

I switch to my Garmin at the course - leave my sub or whatever in a Crown Royal bag in my golf bag pocket while I'm playing.

Phil Mickelson plays (hits bombs!) with a Rolex and Bubba Watson plays with a RM. I think your watch can handle your non professional swing speed and impact forces.

He wears the Yacht-Master 126655 as well.

Not a damage problem, however the deep sea will definitely alter your swing!

No never. You should only put them in your safe. It will ruin the investment value.

Depends on the watch. You are probably fine with a sub or a sea dweller. Probably ok with just about any Rolex. Phil has worn a datejust, a few different cellinis and a YM40 OF over the years. Most of the pros prefer not to wear while playing. Phil is different.

Probably shouldn't with just about any Patek.

And if you even look at an AP the wrong way it will scratch and stop keeping good time, so you probably should not.

Some watches are designed for it like the RM Bubba.

I'd love to hear what Bas has to say about this. While I don't play that much right now (work and kids), I never wear a watch playing anyway. But, I have always understood the mechanics of the swing are not great for the rotor axle. Not so much the actual ball strike but the launch of the swing. IDK, maybe it is an old wives tale equivalent, but I take the better safe than sorry approach, plus I don't like the watch on my wrist during the swing anyway so that takes care of itself. Wear the G Shock.

I find a watch uncomfortable to wear while golfing, so I wouldn't wear one regardless of what it does to the watch.
