I am looking to buy my first swiss automatic watch. I have visited AD's and tried on Rolex models, I am also looking at Ball brand and Breitling. I want something a little different which is where the B&B models come in to play. I love the look of the white Milgauss and the polar Exp II. But for some reason I need convincing to buy the Rolex. Perhaps I view the Rolex as too common, I'm not sure what it is.

You can only convince yourself. If you want a watch that has a staying power then its a rolex. The reason rolex is what it is today is because they don't cater to a fad. The watches are timeless, so if thats too common for you then I can see getting something else. Just keep in mind in 5-10 years that rolex you could have bought will still be desirable and the other brands may no longer be "the it" watch

If you need convincing, dont buy it. These watches cost way too much, and there are too many choices to settle for something that you need to be talked in to.
Sorry if this isnt helpful, but these types of threads are funny to me...I have no desire to talk anyone in to a Rolex unless the company starts giving me a commission

Buy the one that you like.

You have to really want a rolex, and spend the extra money on one.
Quality wise there is no comparison, you get what you pay for in a Rolex, reliability and toughness, there is no other

Not in my book.

The ExpII is a great choice if you're wanting something a little different as it's not as "common" as say a GMT or Sub.

I have to say I always wonder about "convince me" threads. We are all different and what appeals to one might not to another.

All the brands you mention will serve you fine and have their own unique features. It all comes down to what appeals to you.

Depends on how you define "caliber and quality". All three tell the time exceptionally well. All three are generally durable and up to the task of daily wearers. Beyond that, it's very subjective.

Go to a lot of different dealers, do a lot of research on the web. A lot of folks here have many Rolex in their collection. I like to diversify... There is a big show coming up called Basel that will reveal many new models, some of which will be available later in the year. It may be worth it to wait a little longer and see whats coming down the tube... Good luck either way!

As others have said, if you need "convincing" don't pull the trigger on a Rolex.

If you've tried them on and one didn't blow you away, just had to have it, then thats a pretty expensive trigger.

Rolex is definitely NOT for everyone, nor should it be. A watch is a very personal choice and one that I believe makes a statement about the owner, even if only to themself. I had wanted a Rolex ever since I was a child and it was a no-brainer for me when it came time to buy a fine, automatic, Swiss wristwatch. I have NEVER regretted the decision and after joining this forum find that I only want to acquire more Rolex's.

Why do all my obsessions have to be so darned expensive!

Good luck in your search. I'm sure that given time you find the "one"!

I can't comment on Ball but get ready for a huge hit if you buy a Breitling and then want to trade it. From experience that is. Purchase the one which evokes the most emotion while on your wrist.
