Sideways "S"

I heard that a sideways "S" etched into the crytal means that the crystal has been replaced?... If so, is it fair to say that the movement has also been serviced?

How can you tell if you don't know the history of the watch or have any service papers?...

Thanks.

If anyone knows with pictures I would appreciate it.

No.

I should mention that a serviced watch will get better prices than a watch that is say 10 years old and has not had an overhaul...

I just wish most watchmakers would actually tell you what they did when marking your watch, when I do a service there's no mistake what was done and anyone can figure it out. I don't know why it has to be in some secret code don't they want people to know who worked on it. My markings would say 10^RD coa t/c/cry/ax/mnsp/g/d/wt translated the first four symbols are my AWCI lifetime code call them and they will tell you who I am next is clean oil adjust then tube and crown then crystal then axle then mainspring then gaskets detail and watertest. Now you know how it should be done by all watchmakers I am proud to put my marks on the case back and of my work. Rikki

Doesn't have to be as the crystal could have been replaced by a non Rolex watchmaker.

Agree very much and it shows. Does Rolex themselves place this detail on the watch back? In the past it does not seem to be the case.

I have the S crown on my 16570, from when the crystal was replaced at service by Rolex. I've never seen the inside of the caseback ... some things are beyond us mere mortals ..
