On the plus side, he shouldn't have to pay taxes.

This. If this happened to me I'd be taking advantage of everything that is afforded to a dead man. lol. Should make a list. Seems like an interesting thing to ponder.

Problem is he now has no legal identity, papers, passport, drivers license etc.

Starting over can be a refreshing experience, but it helps to have an identity.

There was a true story a few years back about a guy ( not the Tom Hanks movie) who was stuck on a ship or in an airport or something and could not go anywhere because he had no legal papers.

I hope she had at least a $1M life insurance policy out on him and she collected!

I've gone on business trips a lot and I always come back. The guy left and was gone for 24 years! What a Head!

That's crazy, indeed.

You should see what it takes to prove to the IRS that you are still alive if for some reason you are “deleted” from their files. It has happened

Why is being off IRS radar a bad thing?

“I am officially dead, although I’m alive,” Mr. Reliu was quoted as saying in local news reports. “I have no income and because I am listed dead, I can’t do anything.”

Then . . . you must die!

When you are declared “dead” You are off of everybody’s databases. Social Security, IRS, credit bureaus etc.

If you are sitting on a mountain of cash it’s all good. But if you need your social security check or bank accounts or credit it is a rough go. And to get re-activated (declared living) is next to impossible.

Here is a NPR piece about it. Had it happen to a client several years back.

Been dead before. It sucked. Needed to buy a house. Dead men have terrible credit. Got a signature loan with almost 100% collateral (in addition to the house so 250% as I also down paid 1/3.

Got that fixed eventually. Only credit agencies counted me dead apparently

He just needs to state that he is now starting a criminal career and will do anything for money and I am sure the government will give him an identity to be able to arrest and charge him...
