Black Turtle - Ice Cream

Unfortunately the passionfruit ice creams that I purchased were disgusting. They appear to be made of some kind of hybrid ice cream that is about 1 molecule away from plastic.

Here is my ice cream after 1 hour in the sun, it hasn't even melted. The rest of the box is going in the bin.

BlackTurtle-IceCream.jpg

Oh I forgot to mention, here is a quick and dirty wrist shot of my new Seiko Turtle. SPRC49K1 is the model number, there is also a SPRC49J1 which was released for the Japanese and Taiwan markets and has an accordingly 'MADE IN JAPAN' at the bottom of the dial.

This watch comes with the 4R36 in house Seiko automatic movement that for the past few days since new has been running at +1-2 seconds per day. This watch has a power reserve of 41 hours. The movement is well known and contains 24 jewels with a frequency of 21,600 bph.

Seiko rate the 4R36 movement at +45/-35 sec/day which is extremely conservative given my experience and those of many others that I have read. I can only assume that Seiko states a very conservative rating so as to avoid the accuracy fanatics from pounding the doors of their service centre for warranty claims if the daily accuracy tolerance was stated to be much lower.

Although the case size is 45mm it wears and looks close to 42mm or less. The case coating is said to be diamond like crystal black or PVD, but I'm going with the former.

Like all Seiko Turtles this watch will, if not already, become a Seiko as the all black version (limited edition) is quickly getting a cult like status.

The applied patina to the hour markers and dial text is a step up in style for the Turtles which in the past have been more conservative with their white on black dials.

The 4R36 does have positional variance and isochronism (variance on state of wind). So if your watch is running a little fast or slow it can be corrected by the way you leave it overnight or how much you have it wound. So those factors provide the user with some degree of self regulation.

Both aesthetically and mechanically this watch is great value and such a lot of fun. Its a serious watch, but at the same time its a really inspirational step for Seiko and where they are going.

One might possibly draw the analogy that Seiko is to Grand Seiko what Tudor is to Rolex.

Nice Seiko Steve but more importantly what are you going to do about the ice cream fix?

So you found this new Seiko forum Eddie......drats, I thought I could get some peace and quite, but alas

I bought a different brand...(of ice cream) not ALDi junk that they got made in New Zealand.
But the Turtle is a keeper, amazing accuracy and the photo does not do justice to the beauty of this watch.

You know I love the vintage look with a modern utility and the aged lume with the cushion style case in all black is glorious. I would buy this watch again at quadruple the price and still be happy.

Congrats on the turtle Steve it sure is a great watch at a great price. Picked mine up a couple of months ago and have to say I’m still loving it such a fun piece that looks cool and one I feel comfotable wearing in any situation also as you say it really does wear more like a 42mm. Enjoy it buddy

Thank you Sir!!
Yes, its great in any situation, and so comfortable!.
I'm sure Seiko applied anti-reflection to the underside of the crystal. Also love the patina tip of the second hand, same effect I've seen on the current IWC Big Pilot.

Really nice watch Steve. I have a blue lagoon turtle myself and love it. Sorry about the ice-cream. May I suggest next time you get Ben & Jerry or Hagen-Diaz?

Yes, I'll stick to high quality ice creams from now on.
Blue Lagoon is a Limited Edition too so you have done well!

No one can deny your passion for turtles
How do you find the black version in comparison to your other Turtle models?

Thank you Ronnie!!!

Part of the reason why the dial looks so great is not only the faux vintage lume, and the matching tip second hand, but I'm very confident it has anti-reflection treatment to the underside of the Hardlex crystal. I say that because at particular angles there appears to be no crystal at all, its so clear, but at other angles there is some reflection present.
