There's that, and then add to it a pretty passive culture of people who tend to like minding their own business. I've never felt unsafe anywhere here, at any time of day or night.

No, it's because crime rates here are very low, especially against foreigners. Also, most Chinese (apart from bankers and property developers) would rather work hard for the money than steal.

Indeed...although even after several years, you'll neither speak to them nor know their names (in most cases).

If I was going to worry about wearing a Rolex in part of every day life I most certainly would not buy a watch that would cause me any worry.I have been wearing Rolex watches for well over 30 years now.And in that time working and wearing Rolex watches world wide, even middle east, far east, Caribbean. You could count on one hand the number of times people have notice my watch. Now if you are the type that flashes your watch or have a sign on your forehead hey look I am wearing a Rolex then perhaps some would notice the watch more. With today's Rolex wearers it seems to me that once they buy a Rolex they automatically think they are a target for theft.

This much is true.

This is a dangerous state of mind and get you killed.

I'm not saying to put the Rolex watches in the safe and wear Casios and Timexes, but when you have doubts about where you will be going and just how safe things will be, it's best to let caution be your guide.

No matter where you are, you should always be thinking about the possibility of an attack and how you might escape or how you will defend yourself.

I'm not advocating living life in a state of crippling fear, just be vigilant and understand how quickly things can go wrong.

I certainly don't limit my comings and goings, but I do endeavor to exercise a modicum of discretion and dress for the occasion, which includes my watch and other things.

Unfortunately I'm a bit worried since last Monday when I spotted a nasty guy looking at my wrist and then making eye contact with another one, on the other side of the train station hall I walk through every morning when going to my workplace.

I had to change my habits and now I get to work 5 minutes later but I feel safer.

I don't agree. There are places where you can get mugged, but not anywhere, anytime.

Not sure how you can be certain that only a handful of people, over 30 years, have noticed your watch.

Same here. My impression is that no one pays much attention to watches, unless maybe it's some Invicta 65mm monster, ala Flavor Flav.

Perhaps I should have said made a direct comment on my watch,Christ there are millions upon millions of Rolex watches worn everyday in most all parts of this world today. And out of those worn its mostly the WIS type that would even notice it.Yes there are thieves in all parts of the world but the ones that are stolen are a very very tiny proportion to those worn daily. And a opportunist thief mugger etc will quite happily take your watch no matter the brand plus wallet and any other valuables you have with you just use your own common sense in all walks of life.
