How Have Your Rolex Tastes Changed Over Time
I was actually thinking of this today as I'm coming to grips with reality of getting older. As you can tell by my screen name I'm vastly approaching the half century mark and have been getting notices of a 30yr high school possible reunion.
I first got into Rolex in the mid 1980s when I was only 20. I laugh when I recall seeing the 16610 for the first time thinking how god awful ugly it was and had my heart set on a two tone DJ. Problem was my wallet at the time pushed me towards the sub and as a result I grew to like it It goes without saying there are many enthusiasts on TRF that have owned and flipped many pieces over their lives. It makes me chuckle back then when I saw a Patek and said why on earth would someone pay so much for that??? Now I think I wish to God I could pay tens of thousands for a 5711 Bottom line is I tend to gravitate to sport models and not very much into two tone anymore. The grail would still be a 118238 but with these nice new models coming out over the last few years like Smurf and Platona there could be new dreams. For nostalgic purposes what say the lot of you in terms of your tastes? Have they changed much over time? I'm betting theres a fair share that prefer the old styles as well. I happen to be one of the platinum YM biggest fans but I know there are those that turn their nose at it. Sorry for the long thread but I look forward to hearing your thoughts. |

DCGuy, my first Rolex was a gold/stainless DJ in 1982 when I was in my early 40's. Five years ago I sold it and bought an Explorer II white dial.
My only Rolex today is my ExpII and it is a keeper. I have approximately 20 watches in my collection including Omega, Sinn, Oris and Doxa, but the one Rolex is special and the only one I want. Cheers, Bill P. |

I've always liked the Rolex watches, but I've only been more than vaguely familiar with the line since I bought my first, which was a 114270, about 6 years ago.
I prefer the thinner lugs of the 114270 and the 14060M, but I like the thicker lugs of the 116200, the 114060, the 116660, and the 116710. Although the 116610 is supposed to be the same case as the 114060, for some reason it looks too boxy for me.

Started with the TT DJ, but always had my eye on a YG DD too. Surprised myself when I fell in love with the 116718. Tastes do change!

I'm 3 years in and still figuring out my honest tastes. The problem is that they are all so well designed and made that even if one model is not my favorite... it still has that Rolex DNA and I can see myself wearing and enjoying it.

For me Rolex is TT only and has always been like that. However, I can't see myself anymore wearing my 36 mm DJ, it looks too small to me. My Daytona at little less than 39mm represents the perfect size to me.

I've always liked the sport models most but ever since seeing a DJ ii on the wrist of a guy on the subway a few days ago I have been thinking about getting one.

Yep. I used to think the Sub was the top of the Christmas tree. Now I've decided I like the 34-36mm models the most. AK (of course), DateJust and especially the Explorer. The 14270 is the perfect Rolex.
Years ago I wouldn't have given it a second look

No rhyme or reason for me. Been through AK, Exp, ND Sub and Milgauss, all lovely watches but none held my interest long term. Then the Ice Blue Cellinium entered the picture - I love it, should be staying for awhile, maybe forever . . .

Yes, I prefer the older ones....i.e. one's w/ lug holes.

Not much. I was drawn to the professional series and now have a gmt and sub. I'd like an exp 1 or exp 2. I'd like a DD or DD2 but can't decide on a metal considering the obvious choice, pt, is out of my comfort zone.

Have always like the sports model cos it's at 40mm . DJ at 36mm doesn't quite sing for me. Have not really check out the DJ2 yet.

I'm not sure if it is changing taste or changing budget.
Initially, I loved the steel sports watches, and ended up purchasing a polar explorer II. A decade later, I got a black dial SS Daytona. Now, I'm getting to really like the two tone GMT Master. All gold wouldn't be my style, but gold/steel/ceramic is a very, very nice combo. I see it lurking in my future. |

I've really only been focusing on Rolex, for coming on a couple of years now.
Precious metal pieces are out of my price range for the moment and I prefer white gold, but the more I hang around here, the more I think the YG could be for me too, where previously I would have never worn one, as I didn't think I could pull it off with my skin tone. Another piece which I wasn't into at all at the beginning was the Daytona.. I just couldn't see what others did. Nowadays I would love a Daytona and think it is really nice. |

Moving recently from SS to YG pieces. However still always maintain at least one SS piece.

Started with the sub (1996) then got a dj36 (2008). Love them both but heart is still with the sub. Love my dj also because it has been unmolested by the polishing wheel and actually has fatter lugs and is so comfy.

Back in the day the SS sports models appealed to me the most. I was also never particularly attracted to had the DJ and DD style of watches, particularly if they were gold. I thought of them as watches more suited to "older" people.
Nowadays, my preference is still for the SS sports models (especially the Submariner), but I have been eyeing the DJ and DD models with some desire and the idea of gold doesn't seem so off limits anymore. Then again, nowadays I am older than I was back in the day! |

I always thought the DJ was the Rolex standard and never really looked at the other models that much. But then again I really wasn't into watches that much earlier in life. All that changed with the addition of my 114060 and now I love the sports line. Still have a fondness for the DJ though.

Not really, Sub was my initial love and I have one. The change would be my interest in Gold, the DD is not a watch I would have thought I would own. Never thought I would like a TT watch but adore my TT Daytona, would be happy to add a Root Beer originally hated its colours till I saw one in the flesh.
