That was short-dead (GP relaunches Laureato 38)

Caught this this morning:

Interesting dial color, and more interesting that GP is one of the few brands acknowledging its mid-size watches as true "unisex" pieces, rather than making the gender-binary for marketing purposes.

Very interesting and a nice alternative to typical APs too. Bravo GP

I do wonder how the contrast between the dial and seconds hand is in person. Overall though I am a fan

That's the one to get. Perfect size and great dial.

Looks fantastic. Personally think the 42mm fits perfect for my wrist, but its great for others that find the 42mm to be too large to have another option. With the way GP gets beat up on the secondary market, it's hard to find a much better value right now in my opinion for a sports watch than a lightly used or grey market Laureato.

I was excited to hear that GP launches a new 38mm and like the color. However, it seems like GP is trying really hard to push up market with its pricing. This one is more expensive than the 42mm probably because of the gold rotor. That’s after 2 price increases this year and launch of a $54K gold version. Is GP going to price itself out of the market…

While I don't know that $54k is justified, I believe part of the reason that gold watch is priced as it is is the onyx dial. As I understand it, onyx is very difficult to work with.

You mentioned the gold rotor on the new 38; is it a new movement compared to the old 38?

Not sure about other countries, but in Japan the Laureato has waiting lists of well over a year and second hand ones are selling well above the cost new. So seems demand is still high even after the price increase

They had a 42mm steel limited edition with Onyx dial back in 2020 and I was priced at just a little more than $1K over the basic. So I don’t think Onyx by itself really cost a lot more.

The movement in the new 38mm is the same movement as some of their dress watch, so I think the biggest added cost is the pink gold rotor.

Good to know. In the US, the Laureato has become a lot more available. I’ve seen blue 3 handers and blue chrono on AD’s case.

Good point. Guess the theory must be: If you price it (high) they will come. Or GP isn't in the same position to hedge against future rises in gold prices/use financial instruments like futures/keep large reserves as Rolex or other large makers.

Even the quartz 34 in all-gold is over $40,000 (and I doubt those tiny diamonds add that much to the price).
