If you had 30k dollars…
And could only buy 3 non Rolex watches brand new at msrp from an AD, what would they be and why? (In other words, not a pre owned watch trading below 10k and each watch must be less than 10k dollars msrp, so not two 1k dollar watches and 1 28k dollar watch etc)
For me it would be: Omega speedmaster Cartier santos medium JLC reverso green dial |

If three watches (original question) -
Zenith El Primero Original, reverse Panda dial, for a chrono Glashutte SeaQ, for a dive watch JLC Master Control, for a dressier watch Logic: three watches that fill different purposes, all great references from terrific brands. I pick the El Primero over the Omega Speedmaster because the new El Primero release is outstanding, but could easily go Omego for Zenith here. If two watches (what I would actually do) - A. Lange Sohne Saxonia thin, for dress watch Glashutte SeaQ, for sports/dive watch Logic: I’d rather have two great pieces, than three very good ones. By limiting the number to two watches in your budget, you get an ALS, and that’s simply next level finishing. Glashutte SeaQ fits the bill for a sports watch, and it’s outstanding, though could have gone Blancpain Fifty Fathoms for watch two here. Also tempted to go ALS Saxonia Automatic at a higher price point, and making the second watch a Sinn ~$3K to keep in the $30K budget. If one watch: Patek 5167A, which is impossible to get new at an AD, but playing along for thought exercise! |

Zenith chronomaster sport
IWC 41mm chronograph Glashutte panomatic lunar Might stretch that budget a little and swap the IWC for a JLC master control chrono

The why for my three choices: The speedmaster is an iconic watch. Full stop. The new 3861 with the updated bracelet really improves the feel of the watch from what I understand. I find that its a better looking watch than the Daytona and the price point, $7,150 for the saphire sandwhich is pretty reasonable. I also love that the watch can go from bracelet, to leather strap, to nato and still retain its essence. The medium santos combines the size of a dress watch (and the face) with the qualities of a SS sports watch. The white face is so clean. The ability to add a leather strap and make the easy switch between bracelets really makes it like having two watches in one - sports and dress. This second watch could have been a tank americaine in SS as well, but i went with the Santos because of the metal bracelet option. Reverso - an icon. Obviously top notch movement produced by JLC. Such a unique watch - the ability to flip the case over even though its not something people do anymore for its intended polo purpose is still so cool. The green dial here is great, love the idea of adding a black aligator strap also. Could go with any reverso here though and be right. |

I’ve owned a Reverso and Speedy for awhile. As a collector, I highly recommend them. Would never sell them.

If I wanted to blow 30k I'd certainly not follow OP's formula. I'd rather spend most on a nice sports watch and leave around 3k each for a cheap SS dress watch (such as a preowned JLC Ultra Thin) and a beater (preowned IWC Pilot).

Each watch must be below $10k msrp. Makes the exercise a little more interesting.

If you have 30K to spend on 3 watches and each watch must be below 10K, then there is going to be some money left over... Just saying.
My picks are as follows: - Seiko diver for daily wear - $2K - Speedmaster for weekly wear - $6K - Reverso for special occasions - $9K My reasoning is as follows. There is no need to spend a ton of money on a daily beater. The Seiko would go with me from the office to the beach. Modern Seiko divers are, essentially, what Rolex was years ago. The Speedy is a bit nicer and I'd rock it to once at week, probably on Fridays. There is nothing special about the watch other than it is probably the best chrono in the price range. Jaeger is dressy enough for modern casual environments.

Glashütte Original SeaQ Panorama Date.
https://www.glashuette-original.com/...6-13-01-80-34/ Glashütte Original Seventies Chronograph https://www.glashuette-original.com/...7-02-08-02-62/ Grand Seiko SBGA461 spring drive https://www.grand-seiko.com/be-en/collections/sbga461g Why: The SeaQ is the best en nicest diver watch in existence. And I love diver watches. The Seventies is the best looking integrated bracelet watch in existence. And the chrono caliber with the big date is a marvel. Spring drive is an exciting and interesting technology mixing tradition with innovation. And since I love Divers so much it has to be the SBGA461.

understood i would offer having gone through the exercise, as well as a reasonably broad and diverse group of watches, in my experience the 5711 satisfies me the most but in the interest of the question... panerai 111 daily beater omega speedy iconic and legible grand seiko sbgw253 perfect dress watch (in my collection for a relatively long time, it is a bargain that nails the design aesthetic.) probably saved 15k on the budget with the above but they would be my choice regardless. more money doesn't always mean a better watch. my actual go to watches at the price point below: exp II 16570 polar submariner 14060 ps Brew watches look fun.

A $30k budget is healthy for a nice collection, although I would personally be looking at a 4-7 watch collection with a variety of brands, types, and price points.
Keeping to 3 pieces is more challenging but doable, although I wouldn't want to have fewer pieces. For me, a 3 watch collection means 3 versatile watches, one of which is a diver on a bracelet and two dressier watches, one on a black strap and the other on a tan strap, with at least one of them being a chronograph (my favorite complication). What is most challenging about your question is the equal price allocation, as I would go for 1-2 more expensive watches (e.g., ALS, VC, or a complicated JLC) with the small balance going toward some less expensive watches (e.g., Tudor, Longines, Rado, Hamilton, Seiko, and Casio) with that budge. Regardless, given your criteria, I would likely opt for the following: JLC Reverso Classic Medium Duoface $9,350 Breitling Premier B09 Chronograph 40 Pistachio Green $8,400 Omega Seamaster 300 $6,800 I have no reservations about the JLC dual time. The color of the Breitling chronograph gives me a bit of pause in a 3 watch collection but I think it works well with greens, blues, and browns and the in-house handwind column wheel chronograph movement is difficult to beat for the price. The Omega isn't my ideal diver (I'd probably go for a Rolex Submariner in this list price range but that's not an option due to no Rolex) due to the fauxtina and polished bracelet but it's a still a great diver and I don't like dates. I thought about choosing the GO SeaQ but I don't like dates and it can't be had on a bracelet in any size for the MRSP price cap. Thanks for the hypothetical exercise! |
