I still don't know or care if Steve McQueen actually wore an Explorer II

But what I do know is that he actually wore this exact watch (on film!!)
We just sold it and I finally get to share it ;-)

(See attached pics)

(Sorry for not being rolex related, just felt the need to share this one with guys who appreciate vintage and Steve McQueen)

Really nice piece of history.

Steve McQueen wore a 5512 as an everyday watch ;)

And he wore it in several films, including Le Mans if you look carefully, as well as Towering Inferno and The Hunter.

Now that's a McQueen, unlike the 1655....

Stunning and classic watch.

Stunning and classic watch.
So the question (as well as mystery remains), how did the 1655 become known as the 'Steve McQueen' Rolex?

As far as I know, it is a falsely perpetuated myth.
Someone may have wanted to link the 1655 to a celebrity, perhaps to make it more attractive to potential buyers. Back in the days, the 1655 wasn't a big seller.

We have the real Paul Newman, Pussy Galore, Magnum PI, James Bond - Did I forget anyone?

It isn't, only by people that own them (not everyone of course) but not to the rest of the world.
