$81,000 Speedy what is omega thinking?

Has anyone here seen this article? It’s an amazing piece but the price seems a little too steep for me!

Omega is doing this for the true Speedy enthusiast with ultra deep pockets. This wasn't made for normal Speedy fans. I don't really think Omega is expecting to sell a lot of these.

In context, how many Rolex or Daytona fans would pay that much for a Paul Newman? Shows the market I suppose they are aiming at (not me for sure).

Two weeks later, I still don't think the price makes any sense wrt to the rest of the market (at retail).

Omega are trying to get into the world of Rolex/PP etc unfortunately this isn't the way.

and they will sell every last one. The grays will get the first ones and they will be at a premium.

The new "hype collector" loves them a limited edition.

It's not a limited edition. It may still be true that "hype collectors" like absurdly priced watches, grey or new, but this approach won't do much for the general standing of Omega vs the Rolexes of the world.

It's a gorgeous watch but I echo the sentiments that the price makes no sense. I would much rather have a 3861 Canopus Gold Speedmaster (I love that silver dial!), a steel 321, and $20k+ left over for whatever else I wanted from Omega. I could see the watch priced at $55k or for their asking price if it was in platinum but $81k for white gold is nuts.

I don’t like the price. But I have to assume they know exactly what they are doing and have decided that they will sell N pieces and that $81,000 x N = what they will make back. Or maybe they don’t care how many they sell because of the margin being so good on each piece.

Awful strategy. Not how you raise your brand.

How many of us have experience running a multibillion dollar consumer brand? I don’t. I’m sure it was a well calculated move.

Having inflated MSRP is literally the WORST thing to do. They will never learn.

At least Omega is closing down some boutiques, but I'm afraid they will just go back to more and more AD....if they can find AD willing to accept the line...

Omega treats their ADs like garbage, how can they justify raising MSRP so aggressively while the watch cases at their AD points of sale are full to the brim with watches sitting there for weeks or months at a time. On top of telling their partners that they can't give any discount under threat of getting pulled out of the brand.

If I were starting up as a jeweller business selling watches, Omega would be one of the last brands I would try to get under my umbrella. I would rather try to sell entry to mid level luxury brands with actual good value like Oris, Tudor or Breitling and work my way up to Rolex instead.

^ this ^

It's ludicrous to say Omega is trying to elevate its brand to PP levels- they're not dropping regular Speedies from the line or banging up their price to $13k.

It's simply an option for buyers with deep pockets who want a different Speedmaster.
Doesn't have to a "limited edition", there'll be few enough produced to make it sufficiently rare in the wild. They will sell every one they make.

If it's not for you then it's not for you.
I don't get Rolex Eye of the Tiger / Rainbow Daytona pieces, but those somehow manage to sell...
