Rolex GMT Master

Happy new year everyone!

So I inherited one of my father's watches and Im trying to figure out which GMT Master this is. The dial is very unique. The dial is black but has a chocolate/brown appearance when it is under direct light.

I know the version is 16735 and that it is a Rolex GMT Master and that just about it.

I would like to know what the current value is and if Rolex actually made the watch original with this color combo or it has been modified. I have no intentions on selling it for it's sentimental piece for me.

Nipple dial 16753 (if quickset date function)

Jubilee 62513H bracelet

Movement should be a cal.3075

Possibly the bezel insert has just been changed. The dial looks like a standard tigereye one...

Enjoy the watch!- great piece.

Surely the dial could be changed, but the dial and handset are tritium lumed parts and Rolex just change with SL (superluminova) parts.. Furthermore they wont give you the old parts!

The tritium is definitely dead 😵. I have no idea if the piece has been modified. It has the quickset function. I opened the bracelet 16753 is inscribed in it.

I do like the whole used look, kind of adds character to the watch so I'm going to keep it as is.

Thats the best... If you dont like the black bezel insert, just go to a AD and buy a brown or brown/yello one.... But ask them to take old one with you... They dont cost a huge lot of money, I whink about 100-150USD incl. change

Would look a whole lot better with the correct root beer insert. The black inserts were for black dials so the watch was never sold this way.

Looks like a nice watch!

Yeah. The bezel insert makes it look odd. With the right one it will look much nicer.

That is a root beer at least going from the dial. Can you add a few pics of the bracelet are they oval or do they have a "D" cross section? Actually, just post a pic of the clasp and inner markings. Yes, as everybody has already mentioned, it has the wrong insert at least if it is mostly original. It should be half gold half brown. The serial number will also reveal some information, just post the first 3 or 4 digits, like such 3,866,XXX that will also provide some information. If Springer comments, then heed the advice. Mine has a later insert on it, most likely for your model or even later, like such (image). This is more of a Clint Eastwood version.
Good luck!

I could be wrong but the dial appears to be black not root beer. The yellow-cast lighting appears to distort the true color.

How about placing the watch outside for a photo. Take a close-up of the dial and forget the finger pics - concentrate on the watch.

Below is a copy of the original photo as posted here by the OP and a color corrected photo.

John Paul Jones

Hi
I have this watch. It's a 1675 variant
Interesting their our a number of photos showing John Paul Jones the bass player for Led Zeppelin wearing it. So I call it the John Paul Jones
My black bezel is fading to a dark blue (or maybe I'm color blind). This watch was probably produced around 1977. Interesting the year of Led Zepplins last US tour.
Nice piece enjoy

Looks like an original black dial, so the black/gold insert is correct.

One of my favorite combinations. Mine is a bit newer but sees a lot of wrist time.

What a fantastic watch. Congratulations. Agreed with the advice to pick up the correct Rootbeer bezel insert. There are a few places in LA to pick one up. Geary’s in Beverly Hills should be able to order for you. I believe you can also stop by Rolex in Beverly Hills. You can also find inserts here on the forum from time to time and you can always ask questions of the group to find exactly what you need. The group is knowledgeable, helpful, and you can really learn a lot from the group here.

I have a similar GMT, but mine is just a few years older and has a black dial. There are some how-to posts on here about how to change the insert yourself - or you can stop by a place like Feldmar Watch Co on Pico Blvd near Robertson and they usually will do stuff like this for free.

Now that you have taken the bracelet off you might want to give it a good cleaning. I usually soak it in warm water with a little Windex or 409. Get a soft tooth brush and give it a good brushing in the links and in the clasp. It’ll really make a difference. Careful not to lose the end links or pins.

As far as my knowledge reaches the dial is originally a black one which has been faded due age and moisture. So watch out with water.
