Service needed for 1680
The crown on my late Dad's 1680 came off today when I went to change the date (haven't worn it for a couple days). I can screw it back down but it obviously needs some attention. Can anyone recommend a RSC in SoCal? Am I limited to Rolex in Beverly Hills? TIA.

Beverly Hills is the only RSC in SoCal. There are certainly a number of independents that you can find by searching the forum.

Gaff, same thing happened to me with my dads red-sub 1680 two months ago. Took it to my local dealer and they cant touch it. To old, no parts. Contact Phil Ridley, Mesa, AZ.
He specializes in vintage 1680s. Excellent to deal with and it does not sit around. Mike |

If you want someone local (semi local), Tom @ D's Time Service in downtown San Diego is the only one that handles my vintage watches.....perfect track record so far so highly recommended.

Hey Dan S, if you are cracking the case on my red-sub, dont you have to have gaskets and a pressure chamber? Ernie up at the Sunoco station also advertises Rolex repair! Nice
new set of Vise-Grips. Mike Hey Gaff65, glad you contacted him. Top notch. Mike |

It's a dive watch, Mike. Let's not get so precious about it just because it's a Rolex. Just because you only know one watchmaker, doesn't mean that he is the only one who can possibly open and close a watch.
Any decent watchmaker can reseal a case and do a pressure test. Not just the three people who are regularly recommended on the forum. Keep in mind that the vast majority of us would never post our watchmaker's info on a searchable forum.

Dan S, I agree its an old mechanical dive watch. $285 brand new at the store in 1969.
Gaff was looking for a repair tech. Who would you recommend to do the work? Specifically, not just any good watch shop? By name, a recommendation. Mike |

As I noted, I'm not making recommendations on a searchable public forum. I have no desire to have a bunch of time-wasters contacting watchmakers saying that I referred them.

If the crown unscrewed from the stem it's an easy fix for any watchmaker. This is one of the reasons we used to be taught to turn the crown in only one direction when winding, rather than back and forth.
If the retainer screw came loose and the whole stem came out, again, an easy fix. If you feel that you need an overhaul, you have been given a couple of good recommendations.

can you show a picture of the crown thats come out?
As Tool's suggested, it could easy to harder fixes depending on whats come loose. Hopefully the stem hasn't broken |

1 - You mean you got the crown and stem in your hand separated from the watch; or 2 - the crown was in its correct place but felt loose - not engaging any movement? |

The crown itself disconnected from the watch. Stem still in place. Screwed it back down and after a couple attempts was able to get it to stick so I could change the time/date. Will leave it alone for now as I have other financial matters to attend to.
