Your Favorite All-Time Rock Guitar Solo

For die-hard 'rock' afficionados, the topic of one's favorite all-time guitar solo occasionally comes up. While songs such as Free Bird, Comfortably Numb and Stairway to Heaven frequently top the lists of various polls and individual favorites, there are countless others, oftentimes less played that warrant serious attention as well.

While striving to avoid the atypical shortcomings of various 'top 100' listing selections, I am going to start off with a piece that probably falls into the top 1-5 (although rarely acknowledged as such). Funkadelic's Maggot Brain originally composed and recorded by the late Eddie Hazel in 1971 (along with subsequent renditions performed by Michael Hampton who replaced Hazel as Funkadelic's lead guitarist, Carlos Santana, Warren Haynes/Derek Trucks et al) would seemingly qualify this brooding, pathos-laden guitar solo as one for the ages. Some rock music critics have even gone so far as describing the instrumental as 'Jimi Hendrix meets David Gilmour'. From a personal listening/perspective, Maggot Brain and its creative use of the Pentatonic E Minor scale + fuzz pedal epitomizes one of the best musical offerings from that particular timeframe in rock history.

Joe Satriani's live version of "Always With Me, Always With You". He throws everything into it and it's an incredible piece of written material for rock guitar. I think it demonstrates why there aren't very many Joe Satriani tribute bands around, lol! At 8:10 the bass player takes off with him.

For me, Duane Allman in "Dreams" is my all time favorite guitar song. He used a glass pill bottle for his slide play... not really a solo, as drums and base accompany his magic.

Tough call but Randy Rhodes with Ozzy. Can't pick a song there are about a dozen with incredible solos.

Saw SRV's last NE concert with Jeff Beck and was blown away! Have seen Clapton probably 10 times, always in awe, Satriani like 6 times and Eddie 3 times. Pure talent Steve Morse and Eric Johnson are hard to beat, Eddie though is easily the most entertaining...

Icon19 One of the Greatest Rock Guitarists of All-Time

All the above are Fantastic! However, no one has mentioned Joe Banamassa. He is IMHO among the best guitarists players of all times too.

Neil Young@number 17 is a bit of a stretch considering the other guitarists following him on the list (and one of the primary reasons I don't pay too much attention to RS rankings).

Don't need YouTube videos and certainly NOT Rolling Stone magazine to tell me what I think.

After seeing SRV live answers the question for me.

Joe Banassa's great! Funny, I was checking out the YouTube video below and I recognized the drummer, Tal Bergman. I played a show at CBGBs, and recorded with him at Carriage House studios in the early 90s. He was playing with Billy Idol at the time. Luckily I was the guy who always had a camera and have tons of pics from back in the day.
