I have a few questions for you guys about Panerai. Some may possibly stupid, but hey I'm learning.

Anyway what is the difference between a Luminor Marina and a Luminor Base? Is one hand-wound and the other automatic or something? While I'm on that, I have a question about hand-wound movements. How often do they have to be wound, and do they keep time just as good as an auto? My other question is this. What is the most inexpensive watch that they make in the 44mm range with the crown guard. Nothing fancy, just with the sweeping seconds with a black dial on a strap. Last question I promise. What is the most inexpensive watch they make like stated before except with a titanium case, and are the titanium watches much lighter? Sorry for all the questions, but I'm just.

THe Marina's have a second hand, the Bases have non. Just the hour & minute markers.
For hand wound ones, the Luminor line is generally around 2 days. From a stopped watch, it takes about 50 turns. Not full rotations, but 50 rolls of the thumb & finger.
I wind mine every morning about 22 times.
As afar as expensive, they make a white gold Luminor In house movement that would set you back about $25,000 +- Canadian ( if you can find one)
THe most inexpesive watch in Ti, would be the 176. Base Ti. Not positive on the price, but not really excessive. And it is significantly lighter.
Did a quick search, a LNIB 176 can go for $3,600 US

Here we go:

1. The difference between a Luminor base and a Marina is that the Marina has the subdial-seconds counter. They both use the same Unitas-based handwound movement, but the Marina has the seconds counter complication.

2. The current Unitas-based movement runs at 21,000 bph, so slower than most auto movements and has a PR of about 56 hours. So you are winding it every other day give or take. They run within COSC regs, so very accurate and equally as accurate as any auto.

3. The least expensive Marina with a seconds counter is the PAM111. I cannot recall the list price in the US, but up here it is about CDN$5400 plus tax. It comes with a calf strap and a very nice rubber dive strap and a screw driver to re-re straps and buckle.

They're both hand wound movements with a 56 hour power reserve. And yes, they're just as accurate as an auto. The most inexpensive is probably the 112, it retails for about $3650 US and the 111 is about $3950. There are logo models too like the 0000 (same dial layout as the 112) and the 005 (same dial layout as the 111) that may be just a very little bit cheaper, but they have solid case backs and not see through like the 111 and 112

Forgot about the 05Logo. It generally runs about $300 less than the 111, if memory serves. It is the least expensive Marina.

And in case Tyler is wondering, the 05Logo has a painted dial, whereas the 111 has a sandwich dial, ie. the dial has cutouts revealing a luminous plate beneath, giving the dial a 3D effect.

BTW Craig... I know how much you hate the brand.

Yes, in order to certify with COSC, the movement must have a seconds counter, which the base does not have.

Dave Knoll actually sent me a link showing where some watches without a seconds hand actually got COSC. They do it by marking the movement and tracking it. Remember, only the movement is tested, the watch is not even assembled.

The Ti case is quite a bit lighter Tyler, but super comfy. The SS has some heft, but you want that with a watch of this size.
