How's this for a COINCIDENCE, guys?

Hi guys,

Remember my TT Blue Sub? Well it had the FLAT "S" font on its name (Submariner) as in the pic below...

Now take a look at my new 16610...same thing!!

Try and notice other subtle dial differences. For e.g. the 1 in my 1000 is straight with no tail on top. Some dials might have the '1' with a tail on top. Many other interesting details can be compared and observed. Even the 'm' (after 300) is more slanting than some dials which have a rather straight 'm'.

JJ

Mine is like Clifton's. Your "1" in 1000ft has no tail on it either.

Have you measured the slant on the "m", JJ? How many microns off vertical are they? C'mon, you gotta be specific with your measurements so we can be assured they really are different.

I agree with CJ. If your blue sub and the current 16610 have the flat 's' and no 'serif' on the numeral '1' then yours is obviously a fake and Mansor's is a large distributor of Italian-made fakes.

John, you are denigrating the Italians. They make much better "replicas" than that. It's clearly a Chinese copy, which the Chinese farm out to the Laotians who make them cheaper than the Chinese can.

Here we go again, hmmm wonder how many suppliers Rolex is useing for their Submariner dials. If they don't use suppliers and are completly inhouse then why the differances?

It's simple as the crack in my _$$, one is a fake!

JJ - I have looked at every picture of a Submariner I could get my hands on (hundreds), and have looked at my own TT Blue Sub (1998 vintage), and NONE of them have the flat "S", as in your photos. Hmmmm...

BTW, will be posting pics of my newly-acquired TT Blue over the weekend. A great stable mate to my other TT Rollies!

"S" flat limited editon in honor to a Sheeper lover

Hey JJ,

Seriously now...I just came form my friends' house and he has a 16610...the S is not flat like yours!! He bought thru an AD (Mayors)...
I think you have to go back at Mansors and ask about it man!
(maybe that's the reason you get always a big discount over there...)
Sorry, but this is the truth!

My old 16613 had the flat S, just different dial makers. Just because it is a D,F or Y doesn't mean the dial was made this year. It is not like they have tweaked the look of the dial in the last 20 years.

Who's even asking you to compete, Andrew....just post away to your heart's content. But when you post, make it a nice positive one.

Thank you.

Well, what do you know, JJ. I found a pic of a Blue Sub with the flat "S". See below. First one I have ever seen (other than yours), but obviously they exist in their authentic state. This one is offered by AstorLive on eBay - a trusted dealer in 100% authentic Rolex watches. So, you're not as crazy as one might suspect!

Thanks, Prince....actually, there are quite a few of those flat "S" fonts going around....perhaps we just haven't noticed until this subject was brought to our attention.

Hi Guys,

The flat 'S' has been around for some time and is not really that rare a breed nor an anomaly. Actually in the vintage Rolex world it is quite common.

Here is a Sub Ref 1680 circa 1970 with a flat 'S':

Here is another Ref 5513 circa 1981 with a flat 'S':
