New old stock question

Hey guys I have an opportunity to purchase a new old stock 16013 with a champagne dial. Watch is new old stock basically a 30 year old time capsule. Never worn!!!. It does come with box but unfortunately no papers can be found at this time:( I was hoping you guys can tell me if this new old stock condition brings a premium. If so what can I expect to pay on top. It does have an absolute beautiful patina to it.

Of course it has a premium, but not like some rarer models.

Maybe worth a little more, but not much more than a well-kept DJ from the same era

Agreed. The cool factor is very high in my book, but these DJs just don't have the collectibility/value of vintage Rolex sports models. I still love it, though, and much nicer than the new DJs, IMHO. Good luck.

Not having papers for a NOS watch would be a non-starter for me. I know others will disagree, but if it is really NOS there would be papers, IMO.

Papers weren't kept with the watch and cannot be found at this time. I can confirm that its never been worn. Its been probably tried on and at most held. Its a very cool thing. The hour and minute lume has aged to a beautiful dark orange.

That's a stunning DJ. I don't like two-tones, but I'd make an exception in that case. Love the patina.

Hey guys been awhile since I’ve posted or been around, but it looks like I am about to pull the trigger on my first Rolex and it happens to be New Old Stock as well.

I was curious about this NOS business. I find it attractive to basically buy a new watch that’s almost 30 years old and unadulterated.

And so my question is what’s the vibe like for wearing a piece like that. Should I keep it boxed away, or wear it?

It wouldn’t be a daily anyway, just my ‘nice’ watch for dressier occasions.

How can I confirm the NOS part? Like beyond the sellers word?

What type of premium to pay? (They are asking for $2,000 premium, but I think I can hack that down to a $1000 above normal retail. Is that acceptable?

Any advice or things to look out for?

I certainly appreciate the help and advice and I am excited to own my first Rolex watch.

I also like original items. I love antiques, coins, and other hobby historical collections (maps, books, civil war, etc) and have a discerning eye but don’t know the markers to pay attention to on a watch.

Any help is much appreciated! Would also consider PMing for details since the deal isn’t struck just yet.

A NOS is exactly that New, but simply older. It should come with all the paper and accessories that it was shipped with. You would be the first retail buyer.

If it is not an AD, it is not NOS, it is used.

Retail for this watch would have been considerably less decades ago than a watch priced today. Even priced at todays list, it would have a very high "premium" from it's era. So, is the premium over it's original list, or tacked on to todays models?

As to wearing it, you have to make a decision. Once it is on your wrist it is no longer mint, and certainly can never be NOS again. Is the price of a never worn watch acceptable to you?

Personally, for a watch to be worn, I would never pay extra for a NOS example because of the loss in value. There are too many watches that can be serviced back to "like new" condition for less.

NOS is only worth a premium if you plan to keep it that way.

A watch in exceptionally fine condition will carry a premium. Pay for the condition, not for the claim that it's "NOS". Let's see some photos!

I’m nervous about displaying photos until I have the deal worked out to at least the agreement on price stage.

Definite small premium on used and certainly more desirable than a similar used piece and an ideal birth year watch. Lack of paperwork is a problem for NOS.

Thanks for the offer, but I need the Thunderbird for the slightly larger fit.

It’s my way of not having to chase a 39-41mm. 36mm is just a tad small and the T-Bird bezel helps me get the little extra size I’m looking for.

I also like the value play for the uniqueness of the Turn O Graph

Guess that gave it away. I’m looking at the NOS Thunderbird by Craft & Tailored or another similar.

Also can anyone tell me the difference between 16253 and 16263?

One major difference is acrylic vs. sapphire crystal, I believe. In my opinion, that watch has been worn. There are some minor marks on the clasp and bracelet. Very fine virtually new condition, however.

I also noticed a deformed screw near the 3135 closest to the 5.

What about the other in classifieds? The 16253?

And what’s the difference in crystals? I’d probably lean towards sapphire over acrylic but I don’t know anything about the subject.

Sapphire is very scratch resistant, and generally the standard choice for modern watches. Acrylic is more typical for vintage watches, and is more readily scratched, but scratches are also easily polished out.

That 16263 sits in a range between modern and vintage for me, with tritium lume and a sapphire crystal. In any case, it's a beauty.

Thank you for that. I appreciate the guidance.

I think the quality is better on that Craft and Tailored 16263 than any eBay options I’m seeing and it works for me without being the $12-$15k 39mm-41mm datejust that I would need.

I just happened to come across this very clean vintage Thunderbird. You would have to add a bracelet.

Gonna try to stick with the sapphire crystal.

I do have another question, could the 116263 jubilee bracelet with the hidden crown clasp fit the 16263 watch? Both are 36mm models and seem to have 20mm lugs. Just wondering if that swap would work?

I have a strong preference for that bracelet over the older model with the stainless clasp. And at the same time I don’t like the bezel on the mid 2000s version. So this would be a good compromise for me.
