Maybe I'm missing something here but all the talk about replacing the caseback is confusing to me. There is a thread that Larry did about removing the engraving.

So I say do it! Why not? Its not the big of a deal to undo it. I have never done it up to this point in my life but I have two sons that I'd consider doing it when I get them there first Rolex.

It's a gift so in theory it's probably something he'll have for a long, long time and resale value wouldn't be an issue. I'd say go ahead and engrave it.

I say go for it!

Engravings make the gift even more special...!

I love reading all the comments on how an engraving will lower the re-sale value. Why would you even attempt to sell a watch with an engraving? You can either have it removed (most of the time its possible) or just replace the caseback.

Having graduated more times than I care to mention, the gifts I received during each one were sentimental in their own right. I did not feel that I needed an engraving to remind me of the circumstances around me getting the gift. However, if there were to be any occasion to have an engraving it'd be a grad!

Best of luck!

In my post, I suggested replacement only so the original caseback could be kept as a memento if the watch had to be sold on with the replacement blank one in its place.

Have it engraved.
Eddie, as always, your words of wisdom couldn't be more true. I completely agree and must say if I ever had a watch as a gift from my parents an engraving on the caseback would only make it a much more special gift to me. The resale value may decrease but the sentimental value would double, I think in this case it's the thing that matters the most.

I like that idea, if you don't want to just go with your son's name I think a simple message of love like this would be a great idea.

Regarding decreasing the value of the watch, engraving on a case back can be removed, and in a worst case scenario Rolex can install a new case back.
I agree. Get the watch engraved. This is a special gift, for a special occasion. Having it engraved adds to the "value" of the gift in my opinion.

I think in this case it applies. Normally I would say no especially if your son would want to sell it down the road but I think he'll keep his first rolex.
