At what point does a watch become art..?
I am curious as to the comments from ROLEX owners, at what point does a fine watch become more of a fine piece of art?
Instead of being able to wear it 24/7 without worry - you only wear it on special occasions and otherwise the watch sits in a jewelry box or safe. I am not talking from a fashion point of view (because I don't imagine anyone would wear a ROLEX Masterpiece 24/7) but more from a "gosh I better be careful what I do with this watch on my wrist"... What has always drawn me back to ROLEX is that they really are remarkable little works of art, classic, timeless in design - BUT which one can wear 24/7 without worry. I feel that some watch manufactures place more design on looks, complications, etc. which have to worn with 'care' as opposed to just being worn. Thanks all. |

I think UN's high end complications fit exactly into that category

Watches are Art when...
Whether Rolex or any watch, IMHO when it crosses the price hump into fine art valuations...or the dial is so beautiful that the watch function is secondary. Examples:

Depends on the individual. Seems some people around here are worried to wear a Rolex 24-7.

In my opinion a watch becomes art when it has a bunch of complications (in-house movement of course!) and a exhibition caseback.
The Patek Philippe 5160J would be my all time favourite 'art-watch'. |

It becomes art as soon as I put it on.

My Sub is not really something I am afraid to wear anywhere. I do play it smart though.. if I'm doing rough stuff around the house, painting, crawling under the car, etc.. then I don't wear it but otherwise I wear it just about all the time. |

One of the main reasons I love Rolex watches is that they are designed to be worn 24/7. Simple, ruggid, reliable and easy to service. I would wear pretty much any rolex daily and wouldnt worry about it.
I consider watches like a PP or AP grand comp a work of art. Super complicated, rare, hard to service, and so expensive I would need a security detail following me around. |

Not worried, just don't like wearing watches to bed, nor the same watch every day of the week.
I think there can be various artistic components in a watch, from pictures on the dial to hand crafted guilloche dials, and finely finished and decorated movements. Sometimes very simple things too - I see the artisitc beauty in the curves on the case of my Milgauss. |

I think all Rolex vintage watch movements (mechanical) are works of art.

For me it's the level of grand complications. Anything in that category is not a watch to wear everyday, but rather was produced to excel in haute horology. Prime example is the Patek Triple Complication 5208P:

IMHO, any watch that you are extra careful when you wear it is considered a piece of art.
As with anything beautiful (a painting for example) you are usually careful when dealing with it. That is what makes art... |

I'd say that any watch that is substantially made by hand starts leaning towards being "art". Art needs to be something created by a human that is a creative expression of something...or otherwise trying to communicate something.
