Rolex 16750 // 1981

Hello all !
I am in the market to purchase a rolex watch and have decided to buy a Rolex GMT 16750 Pepsi from 1981, transitional model, in perfect condition 20/20, full set.
I found this occasion at a famous retailer around 25k$
What are you guys thinking of this price and what to expect in one year if I wait more to find a better deal..?
Thanks for your opinions
Cheers!
Giorgio

Hi Giorgio,

Trust me, do NOT wait if you know what you want. I wanted to buy a GMT Master 2 16760 FatLady from 1985 (birth year) and waited so long that the price went from around 5500 EUR 3 years ago to almost 7000 EUR some months ago...today you will not find it here below 7500 EUR / 8000 EUR.

Take a look at Chrono24, you'll get one for 4k less (around 21k EUR)...even if I think this is to much (13k-15K EUR is just fine).
https://www.chrono24.fr/rolex/gmt-master--id9289492.htm

See you.

Go for it if the condition is really good.

I'm sorry, but 25K is madness. Paid EUR 6000 for a 1981/1982 16750 GMT (of course matt dial) 3 years ago.

If you want to go for perfect, just buy new. Otherwise there are excellent 16750's for around 10K right now.

And why pay so much premium for B&P?? You can't wear B&P!!!

I am no expert but I was recently in the market for a nice 16750, and finding one for 10k US dollars or less was not easy.

The gentleman I bought mine from wasn't trying to squeeze every dollar out of it, and mine had a few little things holding it back from full blown retail. Which is OK with me, but it sounds like the OP wants a perfect watch with B&P... I think Springer would be a good place to start.

$25k is almost gilt-dial 1675 territory, and that's where I'd be looking with that budget.

There’s a nice full set or nearly full set 1675 with the ‘elusive’ all red GMT hand for $16k on a very well known dealers site right now..I’m sure we all know the example I’m referring to...surely I’d consider that piece over any full set 16750 at that price point, unless the condition was mind blowing..even still, I sure as hell wouldn’t spend that kind of cash on any 16750

@Giorgiomob
Certainly one would expect to pay a premium for a mint 16750 full set, yet $25K is much too pricey. Also, in a year from now they will not be this high (though some will ask for the moon if the market remains strong).

Thanks for all your thoughts !

I would like to have your estimation for this watch as I plan buying it:

ROLEX GMT
16750 // Full Set with original papers and box
Year: 1981
Condition: 20/20

Polished and revised.

Please let me know a range of price this watch could cost ?

I will have a look at watches that you mentioned previously and I'm aware to any other ideas of models which are at a good price still.. ;)

Best //
Greg

Maybe, maybe. I don't think I'd be spending $25,000 for a matte 16750 unless it was a mint original - and then I just might pull the trigger. But my experience indicates that there are many more looking for nice 16750s than gilt Subs - especially with the rampant number of fake gilts being sold. But, what do I know?

16/17K was the number for a nice full set only a few years ago. It seems like all prices are tracking fast on a north bound train.

Date"just"24, 1654 full set isn't available at this range of price $16k..
I think the 16750 will be soon at same prices, around $30-40k which I won't be open to spend to..
It's why I'm asking at what price is the current value for this kind of quality ;)
thx all

I understand your question, what I was saying was that there is a nice example of a 1675, box and papers, for $16k on a well known dealers site that’s currently available, or that’s what the site says at least...from the pics it appears to be a decent example...is it in “20/20” condition? Certainly not, it was just a suggestion..but to answer your question, for a pristine 16750 matte dial, full set, in this market, $25k is still pretty damn expensive, but isn’t completely out of line when compared to other complete examples, currently available, that are in excellent condition. I would agree that $15-$18k would be at the top end I would be willing to pay for such a piece...maybe $20k, which I also think would be a fair, ballpark estimate of what a complete 16750 in excellent condition would go for. But if the piece you’re considering is truly in that remarkable of condition and your budget allows for it...why not? $25k might not be completely unrealistic, as insane as that is, IMO..I honestly don’t foresee prices dropping dramatically anytime soon.. but who knows..I would like to see the example you’re referring to though. At $25k my expectations would be very high...as I’m hoping yours would be...just curious, in your description of the piece, you say the watch had been polished and “revised”...what does that mean? Case has been recut? Or that it has been polished to reflect how it left Rolex when new? Truly curious as I’ve not heard of this before.

Rolex 16750 // 1981

Giorgio. Pictures would really help in this situation. If u r willing to pay that kind of price, why limit yourself to 16750? Plenty of good condition b & p 1675 available from reputable dealers at that price range. It seems this is the going price range for full set nowadays. If I remember correctly, Jacek has one listed recently for $24.5k. Lastly revised case is not perfect. Personally I wouldn’t pay that kind of money unless it’s “perfect”.

Sorry, but that ain't happening. . . not for some time.

Never seen so many experts of GMT 16750 sets in one place since I've been collecting and selling. Amazing.

Maybe you can find some sets with service parts, thin lugs due to over polishing or refinishing, partial accessories or ratty dials/hands in the upper teens but nothing nice that one would take home and be proud to show their mother!!!

Saying "Condition: 20/20" and "Polished and revised" is a contradiction. The only 16750 that I've seen sell for anything close to $25k was a NOS full set that sold for $23k. Upload
a picture of the watch, if it's been polished then there is no way I would rate it 20/20.

Sorry, but you have been out of touch for the past three years. Prices are over double now. Nice 16750 matte dial sets are $20,000 plus.

To the OP, if you found a gem mint 20/20 GMT 16750 matte, something that I have never seen, $25,000 or more wouldn't be out of the realm - especially if it is a complete, and I say complete, set.

Pictures? Condition is everything when it comes to vintage. If its overpolished or has replacement parts the price point should be completely different.
