Patek Philippe ref. 5004P

Prestige and Craftsmanship

Often when we think of the art of watchmaking and the brands that exemplify craftsmanship and high horology, there is one brand that will consistently be at the top of the pile, and that brand is Patek Philippe. Patek Philippe is often considered part of the Holy Trinity of watchmaking brands along with Vacheron Constantin and Audemars Piguet. While those two other brands are incredible by their own right, Patek Philippe comes out on top almost every time. With their wide range of models from ladies' dress watches to hyped-up sports watches to the peaks of modern watchmaking and micro-engineering, Patek Philippe does it all. We are unbelievably fortunate, at Gentleman Timepieces, to be able to offer you this genuine marvel of modern watchmaking, the Patek Philippe 5004P Grand Complications Perpetual Calendar Split-Second Chronograph.

Chronographs – the Watchmaker's Nightmare

Released in 1996 the ref. 5004 was a new version of the ref. 3970 - with the addition of a split-seconds chronograph. While the ref. 3970 was already a complicated perpetual calendar chronograph, the task of making its chronograph into a split-seconds chronograph was daunting. One thing in watchmaking is often overlooked, and it's how difficult chronographs are to make. Rolex didn't bring out their own until 2000, and it took Piaget and IWC until 2007 to release theirs. The truth of the matter is; few brands have the resources to pour money into bringing their own chronograph movements to market when third-party companies such as ETA will sell them ready to go. While the base movement of the ref. 5004 is a Lemania movement; it was modified by Patek's artisans to give it the split-seconds chronograph, a truly impressive feat.

Rare for a Reason

The movement for the ref. 5004 was so challenging to make due to the split-seconds chronograph and everything else in the watch that Patek could only produce 12 or so units a year. Patek even went as far as stopping production at one point to focus on other projects. Discontinued in 2011, the ref. 3970 is a watch that few people will ever see in the flesh, let alone own. After all, 12 units a year for 14 years and 50 units in its last year means at most 218 ref. 5004's were made, and that's not including the pause in production. With only these 218 examples in existence, give or take, the ref. 5004 is a genuine Holy Grail timepiece that any serious collector would be proud to own.

What can it do?

The ref. 5004's list of functions is rather long, as its full name at the end of the first paragraph suggests. The ref. 5004 has a perpetual calendar which means it takes into account the length of various months and leap years without interference, a moon phase to indicate the phase the moon is in that night, a column-wheel chronograph that allows the user to start, stop and reset the chronograph as they wish, and the split-seconds chronograph which is known as a rattrapante - which is given away by the presence of a monopusher on the crown at 3 o'clock. The split-seconds chronograph allows the user to time two separate events at once. With such a long list of complications, it is no surprise that Patek could only produce so few. While Patek's watchmakers are all incredibly skilled artisans, the Calibre CHR 27-70 Q, that powers the ref. 5004, needed the very best of the best.

Our Example

The ref. 5004P that we are delighted to be able to offer for sale comes with the entirety of its set. That is its box and outer box, all of its accompanying paperwork and certificates, and its second solid platinum case back. This solid platinum case back can be swapped with the display case back that is currently mounted on the watch if you so choose. With our example retaining everything that came with it when it was bought in 1996, it will make for the crown jewel of any collection. The piece's platinum case also remains unpolished, and as such, the hallmarks on its lugs are perfectly legible. For a watch that was initially bought 24 years ago, this example is in absolute peak condition.

Holy Grail

The Patek Philippe ref. 5004 is a true collector's Holy Grail. It is an extremely complicated, rare piece that was never produced in high enough quantities to fulfill demand in the first place. Throughout its production, collectors would be delighted to get on the waiting list for one. Even in its last year, when Patek made 50 units as opposed to the usual 12, all 50 were sold immediately. With this particular example being in such good condition, with all of its accompanying accouterments, it is a watch that you can be proud to own, whether it is to wear or have as an investment piece.
