My uncle's vintage pocket watch collection with a very special 17th century item
I stopped by my aunt and uncle today. His dad was a hobby watchmaker and my uncle inherited some of that collection.
He says the box with the nicest pieces is still missing (former yugo, post war a lot is assumed missing) I took some pictures. Then he showed me the special piece, made in 17th century (16xx), still working, with ONE hand. They just guestimated the minutes i guess :) You wind it on the center axle with a key that's attached on a leather string, and it still works!! He thinks this might not be the original dial, as he says it was probably divided in fours between hour marks and he thinks the glass is probably not original either. All the gears are handmade with a lot of detail. I had only my phone, sorry about the crappy pics. Next time i'll go with a real camera. I should probably mention that he is nearly blind and what he told me is from memory and not due to internet research. I'll do some digging, i'm intrigued :) If any of you know more about this, please let me know Anyhow, here are the pics of the special piece in higher res.

That is called an onion verge fusee. The onion refers to the round shape of the case and the verge fusee is referring to the chain drive movement.
I believe that metal dials were used up to the early 1700's, before porcelain dials were adopted. So if the watch is from the 1600's the dial would be incorrect. And it has minute markers. So either the dial is incorrect, or it is missing the minute hand. It has what is called Egyptian pillars connecting the plates on the side. And the fancy grill over the balance, is called a balance cock. Here is the only thing I could find with a quick internet search: http://daguerre.fr/lot/montre-oignon...xviiie-siecle/ Given its design I would say from right around 1700, possibly a little earlier, but given the other example, I would guess a little after. |

Thank you so much for the info! Very interesting. Yeah, that's why he meant the dial was wrong (looks pretty ancient to me ) I think it's amazing that you know such details. Thank you again! This is the one i found https://www.invaluable.com/auction-l...0-c-49041d3be3
