Real or Replica Omega?

Hey y'all just wondering if I could get a second opinion on this Omega I'm thinking of purchasing. Reference 4840.31.04, DeVille Prestige. Not too familiar with this style of Omega so I I'm not too sure what to look for when spotting for fakes.


Paying around $500, no Box & Papers

The price seems too good to be true for being on a bracelet. A $2000 watch for $500. Hmmmmmm. That should be your first red flag. Did you buy the seller? Is it a reputable seller? I assume not since the price is so low

The seller is local kid in my area who inherited the watch through his deceased grandfather, along with a little 98' Honda Civic. Apparently, he wants to take his girlfriend to Vegas and ball out this weekend so he decided to sell both the watch and car today.

Ended up deciding to pull the trigger on it and plan to take it to an Omega boutique to be looked at and, if authenticated, fully serviced.

Also managed to snap a quick wrist shot, and I will probably post an update at some point.

I think that kid will one day regret getting rid of his granddad's watch and wasting the money on woman and gambling.
Op you may want to keep a record in case later the kid ask for your help getting back his grandfather's watch.

Nothing points to fake - go for it for $500 you probably will end up a fantastic piece

More than likely

The guy has my number if he ever has second thoughts on it and I would be glad to sell it back to him at a premium after I have it serviced

Would you put work into something and then sell it for the same price you originally paid? Doesn't seem like smart business to me. The watch was authenticated today, and will be serviced in short order regardless of what the seller decides to do with his life. One person's loss is another's gain. That's how profit is turned. Is it it really my fault, or something I'm duty bound to right that he made a bad decision?

It's not OP's job to baby the seller guys.

If the kid made a bad decision, that's on him! He's old enough to go gambling in Vegas, he may need some life lessons. Some can't be told and you'd like to think his family would be the ones stopping him blowing what little money he makes from that, but what do we know!

This is why I keep trying to talk customers into handing their watches down to someone that appreciates them, even if it isn't family. Seen too many people squander their inheritance away. The money is blown because they didn't earn it. And the things are sold off cheap or ruined because they don't appreciate the things their family members did.

Just a couple weeks ago a customer had a neat watch with an incredible story. I offered to buy it, but he didn't sound interested and wanted to pass it down. I hope I'm wrong about that one. As for the watch, it was his uncles. His uncle got it from a German soldier that surrendered to him. Holding up a flag in one hand and the watch in another.

And he should consider himself lucky to at least have the privilege to buy it back. That alone would be worth a premium, IMO.

Thanks ya'll. Had the watch authenticated over the weekend and am now trying to source a 19mm Omega strap/buckle from the proper era.

Here's an updated wrist shot after sizing and some info:

DeVille Prestige Chronograph, model 4840.31.

Utilizes an 861 movement, same as the quintessential moon watch. Apparently they were made in SS, TT, and YG with 3 dial variations; white, black, and silver with each accounting for 60%, 30%, and 10% of production respectively.

Crystal: Scratch-resistant sapphire crystal
Case: Steel
Dial: Silver
Size: Case Diameter: 36.1 mm
Calibre: Omega 861
Lug to lug size: 19mm

I have seen that sometimes when someone low balls a sales price on something and the purchaser knows it is worth way more, that they educate the seller and then pay a fair price. Not saying it is something one has to do, just saying it is something someone might want to do. Especially in the case of a young person not knowing better while the collector is older and wiser. Cool looking watch though.
