Why does Omega keep changing their watch designs?

Except for the Speedy, I've noticed all Omega models go through dozens of never-ending iterations. When the Skyfall AT came out, I loved it as it was an amazing design. When I was ready to pull the trigger, they announced the master co-axial, removed the date window, and polished the center links.

When I started to like that version, I now see they changed the date to be at 6 o clock and with a horizontal teak dial instead of vertical.

This drives me crazy! Why can't they just stick to one design and make it a classic? Not to mention all of the one-off limited editions floating around in the market.

I get that they want to keep things fresh, but I don't want to buy a watch from them if it's going to get outdated the next year.

For the record, I don't have a Speedy because my wrist is terribly small for it, otherwise I'd be all over it.

One of the reasons why I sold my 6 modern ones many years ago and only kept the vintage pieces.

Not to mention the endless “special limited edition”... one reason I will never buy an Omega. A watch brand that lacks focus.

Some hits. Some misses. But they can't be accused of making the exact same watch for 60 years. They did screw the pooch with the phoney belogna 300 re-issue, but the PO line up has been a revelation.

That's not the best decision for a watch enthusiast IMO. Not only the Speedmaster Professional, but countless vintage pieces that are truly amazing watches and are a must have for a watch collector.

The deville changes everytime you blink. Other than speedy pro and recent trilogy, all are very chunky, too thick.....

I bought my Aqua Terra in 2011 when my daughter was born. Honestly, I love the watch other than the lack of a micro adjustment. It really doesn't matter to me if a brand changes designs on the model in the future. I have the one I like, and that's good with me.

I had a 2001 Durango that I loved, and hated the new version. Same with my 2007 4Runner...

They’re not afraid to make changes and evolve. It’s the opposite if the Rolex model. I’m glad. Makes my Omegas much rarer.

They are experimenting until they get it perfect.

I’m a big omega fan. Hoping they slim down the PO. I really want one.

Since the sixties? It's the way the carry themselves my friend. Always has been. It's either get used to it or hit the road. I chose to be vintage exclusive because at least the past they can't change.

But when I look at things like that I remember why I have huge respect for them.

^^ that’s beautiful.

I was just being playful with the line you bolded. But I’d love to see them hit a few right on the mark. They have so much potential.

Personally, between the classic speedy and the classic seamaster, I feel they have two incredibly iconic watches that stand the test of time.

I would like to see more classic designs. I really want to see the PO go back to proportions similar to when they hade the 2500 movement.

That was a damn fine watch. I wish I kept mine. The proportions today are terrible.

I got the sarcasm in your post my friend. And I agree with everything you said here. I'd love to see a slimmer 2201.50 with adjustable clasp and plain caseback, but I'm not holding my breath. After Basel 2017 I thought they would get back on track with the trilogy but it was a one hit wonder apparently. Anyway as I said I love the brand and respect them a lot but I wish they had more stability in their lines and models.

As for design changes, any company changes designs quite often.
Rolex does not change? Look I am conservative too but we can't keep the world in place, tastes are changing. You always have vintage possibilities but modern watches are simply better by any parameter: accuracy, reliability etc.

I wont buy an omega, i believe they lack focus and the best example is their speedmaster "side of the moon" variants.... at the start, we have the dark side of the moon...which is sweet and successful. And then they moved to white side, grey side, red side...god knows how many sides they are going to come up with.... trying to milk the "side of the moon" to the max.

I like Omega. I think the new Apollo 8 DSOTM looks good, minus the yellow. In my experience modern Omegas play really well with various lighting, see the watches in person before writing them off.

The constant design changes is why I sold my 8500 PO and 8500 AT. Too many changes far too often for my taste. Keeping my 2500 PO as my daily wearer and a SubC for work wear.

I think none of the moderns have a chance of becoming a classic or iconic as they are superseded far too soon.

The amount of speedmasters is crazy and for me dilutes the brand

I notice when I was researching on speedmaster, I found it soooo confusing with so many model # and limited edition, so I gave up on the brand :(

I’m not a collector or an aficionado of Omega but it’s good to know that my 42mm PO 2500 is well regarded. It was my first nice watch, and aesthetically it’s as nice as any dive watch out there, albeit a bit thick. It keeps great time and feels great on the wrist. I’ll wear it to the GTG in August. Cheers

Why does Omega keep changing their watch designs?

I would have liked the brand as much as I do Rolex if they focused, consolidated their lineup and put an end to the yearly model changes and unlimited amounts of limited edition releases. It reminds me of what fashion brands do but perhaps they are catering to that type of buyer now. Such a shame to see a great company with so much potential do what they’re doing.

Oh, and I really wish they would slim down the proportions as the recent models are way too clunky and out of proportion. I used to really love my 2254.50 but Omega has drifted away from that design philosophy(current models seem over the top flashy and often needlessly BIG). As much as I want to add an Omega to the collection I probably won’t for the time being. The Moonwatch is the last true Omega but alas the lugs are too big for my scrawny wrists..
