Patek Philippe 5231 J-001 Appreciation Thread

Those who know me will know that the 5131 J was and still is my grail piece.
When it was released, I just couldn't take my mind off of it, it was just one of those timepieces that got me and wouldn't let go. So when it was discontinued a few years ago I was absolutely devastated, like many of others members on here.

Some established forum members here were lucky enough to be able to purchase the piece and kind enough to post lots of photos. So I spent lots of time gazing at their intricate dials from their high quality zoomed pics, talking about the slight differences in the dials and also spending hours debating whether Patek would ever replace the 5131, perhaps with the 5231 (it seemed like the only logical step - no RPR leaks here)!

So as you can imagine, I was absolutely ecstatic to see them release this very timepiece at Basel. I'm simply blown away by it. Initially I was unsure how the enamel dial would look with the 5230 case, but it works beautifully. It has a larger flat bezel (without the engraving) along with faceted lugs which is a nod to the 2523 from 1953. Inside is the refined 240-HU caliber. Simply stunning.

My personal opinion is that the enamel works best with yellow gold. So what do you guys think? Do you prefer the 5131 case? Is it a worthy heir to the legacy of the 5131? for me, there is no doubt.

Alas, it seems like this timepiece will continue to be illusive and almost practically impossible to buy from an AD; I have already been told but I will not give up that easily. Yes its disheartening but one can still dream. I suppose it is part of the euphoria and pain of collecting.

So I will continue to appreciate and enjoy this piece form afar. If you're lucky enough to be at the fair and have pics, please post them, if you're lucky enough to buy one please share your thoughts and views, all opinions / views welcome. Thank you for reading!

This is in my wish list! Patek got this right. I think this is an application piece. So it’s not going to be easy to land one. But we can always hope and dream.

My intial reaction was not to like it but on closer analysis I feel that it is an incremental improvement. I like the lugs and the fact that the case isn’t engraved with the PP logo.

Can’t wait for it in P or G

So happy to see the enamel world time making a come back in this form. For those of you got the 5131 from AD, can you share, realistically, how strong of a relationship you need to have for an allocation? I suppose a few pieces won’t do

I think the answer depends very much on the AD and if it is a family concern or corporate behemoth - if you have passion and can establish a really good relationship with the owners then who knows. I ordered a 5131G on the day of release and 8 years later took delivery of an R (G had been discontinued).

8 years - makes my Daytona and 5711 wait seem like a walk in the park. That’s nuts

I love them both, I didn't think the 5231 case was going to as nice as the 5131 however I have changed my mind. Looking forward to seeing some of the dummy pieces, hopefully they should be available to see in the next months or so?

They have done a great job, they all look great. Lots of dial variation between pieces.

Whether the enamel dial WT is an "application piece" or not depends on who you ask. Patek wants the pieces to go to long-term collectors with a good purchase history. But with the nature of the list price vs redale price, it ends up in the hands of many flippers and resellers. Some ADs don't care in this regard as long as the financial transaction benefits the AD. Others ADs are more selective and will submit collector information to the local Patek distributor as an "application piece".

The new enamel WT look wonderful! the quality of the enamel looks better than the original J did.

I don't think this treats loyal collectors very well have to say however. It will hurt the 5131 market. Couldn't Patek have made a different motif on the dial or done something a little more to distinguish from the predecessor? Anyway that's my take. All things being equal, I suppose I take the 5231 but I quite like the printing on the bezel and case of the 5131.

That Ad delivery story is amazing!

Looks like it is time to get in a heart to heart discussion with my AD (don’t think they do that in this part of the world)

I am due to get the 5980r and 5740 next year or after but am willing to give up all in waiting piece for this.

I didn't get it until I had gone to Geneva on a factory tour.

The moment I saw this I emailed my AD and asked them what it would take for them to let me apply but more importantly support my application :)

Owner was at Basel but he's thinking about it...

Wow now that's what you call a once in a lifetime and unforgettable experience.

After soaking in all the history and craftsmanship around the factory, you must have been dying to reveal the watch.

You make an interesting point because I agree they could have at least changed the dial slightly to appease collectors.

However i'm not quite sure it will affect the 5131 too much in terms of values as the market is bonkers for these types of pieces. I personally think there is space for both. After all the case is still very different and the branding has changed too.
