Perhaps that was a contributing factor - but a deleted tweet by the guy who actually made the mistake (the PWC guy who handed Beatty the wrong envelope) is the actual reason.

Distracted Envelope Award Distribution - yes DEAD - is what his termination papers will read

The guy on the right (Brian Cullinan) was supposed to discard his unused Best Actress envelope before Beatty came to him for the Best Picture envelope. Why didn't he? Because he was busy tweeting a pic he took of Emma Stone for her winning Best Actress. He later pulled the tweet since it proved he wasn't doing his job keeping pace of the envelopes for his side of the stage.

Here's the tweet he pulled (and has now locked down his twitter account).

Wow... This seems to really have bothered a few here... Maybe if they were in support of the grand leader, not as many feelins would be hurt

Lol, classic stuff. Enjoy the responses here.
Don't watch it and don't care.
I got the news from a WSJ alert on my phone.
Too much self appreciation and too political for me.

This may be the first time I have watched the oscars in a decade. It was pretty dull. Frankly, aside from when they paraded unsuspecting tourists through the front row, the blunder was all that made it worth watching

The ratings went up with the "blunder" imagine that!

Sorry to say, but it's not. Occasionally, I have to work with PWC and they really are a bunch of clueless idiots. This does not surprise me in the least.
