With the Rolex Submariner, what does the term 'Flat 4' mean?

I've heard it used quite a lot with regard to Rolex Submariners. What is a Flat 4 and what is the difference between one that is and one that isn't?

so the flat 4 is the older version and replaced with the pointy four ?
