My 15202 is also a white dial - first gen. I think on balance I find the dial and case on the Patek to be better, and the bracelet on the 15202 to be superior. Setting this one is a true pleasure. Buttery smooth and quick set date!!!!!!

I do fear I am in between sizes on links. Was too tight when I got it, added a single link, and now it's a bit sloppy. I might need the dreaded one and a half link. Heh. I am going to wear it a bit more and see if I can get comfy wearing a watch with a little play in it on the wrist.

Took it to my watch maker for the link addition (I'm not messing with pins!) and he put it on the timer... 340 amplitude! I figured he didn't get the correct lift angle or something. It was +2 seconds per day and 0.0 error in pretty much all positions. Hell of a movement. Patek can certainly put together a damn fine watch.

Hey Bill! Get it! Then you can meet me in NYC for a watch extravaganza and we can both wear 5711s to visit Patek, then swap in FPJs for a Boutique visit!

I have to tell you, I am glad I waited as long as I did, and really got my mind right around the collection rebalance. It was difficult for me to let so many watches go, that I had enjoyed so much, to completely remake my collection. Outside of the FPJs I have on order for next year, this was kind of the final cherry. I am under no illusions, an addicted watch collector never has a fully "done" collection, but I do think I am moving into a time of significantly less movement in my stable. Happy about that. As much joy as I get from finding new pieces, after 14 years of it I am sort of ready to just be stable and pick up this or that on rare occasions.

Nice piece indeed
Thanks! Like many people I hate paying over MSRP, but since 2016-2017 the watch market has changed so much I think the old "rules" no longer apply. I know what it takes to establish a relationship - time and money - lots of money. If I was a huge fan of Patek dress watches (I do actually really like them, just prefer FPJ but the classic WT is still one of my favorites), then I might have gone a different direction years ago with Patek. But, it wouldn't have helped me here anyway. I like white dials over blue dials on both the 15202 (and I owned both on this, white dial stayed blue dial is long gone) and 5711, so it's a no brainer to just suck it up and pay what it costs to own what I really want.

I do like that I got a 2018 model that was very lightly used. Mostly I just like that I got exactly what I wanted. If I have learned anything in watches all these years it's that if you try to get something that will closely approximate what you really want, to save money, it will never truly make you (or me anyway) happy. Half of all my flipped watches have been from trying to get close to what I wanted to save time or money, being unhappy with it, and then losing more time and money selling it.

Just get what you REALLY want, and if you can't afford it save more money, then pay up. I wish I knew all of this years ago. Heh.

Have fun with your 5711.
Thanks. 24 months ago I had 18 or so watches, with 14 of them being Rolex. Today I have 6 watches, 3 of them being Rolex, and 3 FPJs on order over the next year or so. So, cut the collection in half essentially, and balanced it out a bunch. 3 Rolex, 1 PP, 1 AP, 1 Panerai, and 3 FPJs. I can live with that. It's manageable.

I have some friends with 20-30 watch collections, and it works great for them, but I most certainly found that for me, 10 or under works best. 3-5 is too little for me to feel like I have enough choice, a dozen or more is too much to contend with and they don't get wrist time.

I know people who are tickled with a nice 3 watch collection. I can respect that. But I know me, and learning exactly what my desires are and not just chasing watches to chase watches was a big part of maturing as a collector I think.

But, we are always learning. I made a couple small mistakes during this rebalancing (this plan to cut watches and "upgrade" into real grail pieces for myself was put into place over a year ago and took a great deal of time to arrive at where I am today). It happens. It is hard to chart out precisely what you think will make you happy with watches. Or it is for me anyway!

The 5711 is a nice cap to this effort. Head over to the Non-Rolex forum next year to see the FPJ incomings that will round this fun out!

I like where your head is at on this one!

Pretty well explained in my cathartic blathering above.

I have moved on from every "hot" modern Rolex you can imagine - Hulk, BLRO, Blue SkyD, BLNR, SD43, etc. I am lucky to have a great AD relationship and can get most things pretty quickly at retail, but eventually realized I wasn't building an Instagram collection (I don't even have Instagram the troglodyte that I am), I was building MY collection.

I have a flat 4 Kermit full set unpolished gem that is so charming I just can't part with it and scratches my pure SS classic 5 digit Rolex itch (these things are hard to find now in this condition with the paperwork so well put together so I do not think I could ever easily replace it).

I have an unpolished original state absolutely spectacular example of a nipple dial 16753 from the early 80's. Scratches my TT vintage plexi itch, and I just love the 80's vibe. Nothing else like it! But not a watch that anyone on Insta would give two craps about. Fine by me. I love it.

I kept the green dial Daytona. Full PM, and I just think this is a special watch. The green dial is unlike anything I've ever seen.

So that's it. A modern PM Daytona, a classic 5 digit Kermit, and a vintage TT GMT. I think those three watches really tell the story of Rolex sports watches for the last 40 years. All metals, eras and major sport lines covered in 3 watches.

One more thing! So, I am basically out of watch money with this PP and the FPJs next year, but man do I like that new Moser Streamliner!

That may have to go on the "one day" list.

Not a wrist shot but kind of a fun picture.

Big congrats! The 5711 is one of my favorites.
Collectors go through different phases of watch collecting and I’ve been thinking of consolidating my collection also.

Nice thread, OP. Thanks for sharing your journey. Love the white dial, too! (I never felt the love for the Nautilus blue; I always feel it should be a little "bluer")

I read it all! Haha thanks for the additional color. This hobby is all about the journey. Not the destination! Good to read your insights throughout your collecting.

Congrats again on the 5711 as well

Congrats! I love mine, so pretty with the white dial and contrast. Not sure what the fuss is over the blue one, personally feel the white suits the reference so much better.

Crazy what they are selling for right now!

Super post and excellent pictures! Man, I have been on the list for three years that I have just about forgotten about it until now. Beautiful choice with the white. I have seen two 5711 in blue but never in white yet.

Can’t wait to see what else you got coming from FPJ.

Congratulations!
