Panerai Owners
For those that wear Panerai...any suggestions on a good piece to start with? Please include photos if you have them. Thanks!

This question perplexes every first time owner. You will get multitude answers here. Radiomir or Luminor, 44mm or 47mm, Sandwich or Sausage.
My advice based on experience is go and try them on. Lots of them. Then go back and try them again. Why? I had my heart set on a 47mm Radiomir. I’m now on second 44mm Luminor as the Radiomir models just didn’t feel right! This is my daily classic 233. First Panerai in-house movement. 44mm, Sandwich dial, 8 day manual-wind movement, gmt, power-reserve, incredible dome crystal and exhibition back. Good luck.

I started with a 111, then got a Sub024, then a Sub1305 and most recently got a 375. This is over the span of the last 13 years. I actually can't see getting any more. Got two Luminors covering both 44mm and 47mm, one with Bettarini case, one 1950 case. On top of that, one has an ETA movement and one is in house. Got my Subs checking the same boxes. I wear them all regularly and get a lot of joy out of them. I tend to gravitate to the 111 and the 1305. The 111 is the worst strap hog of all of them. It goes with any strap and I've amassed quite a few.

May I suggest you visit local AD or boutique and try few sizes and models first to get better understanding of design and wearability.

My personal favs are the base models, manual winding, examples: PAM 000, PAM 005, PAM390 (of course)
Now that I have the PAM390 for close to a decade, I am itching for a PAM with a more complicated movement, maybe with date and GMT function. Let's see. |

As has been advised by many, go try them out. Put the watch on your wrist and see which sings to you more. Different watches wear differently and you really have to try it on to “feel the connection”...I only have one PAM and I chose the 1312. I chose this because of the 44mm 1950 Luminor case, small second hands, date and a slimmer case.

About a year and a half ago I was dead set on getting a Radiomir, 45mm, wire lugs logo model (like the 753/754 in the catalog today). I tried it on a couple of times but couldn't pull the trigger.
The Panerai thirst kept nagging at me and I slowly shifted towards the Luminor 44mm 8 days in my mind, somewhere in the beginning of this year. Tried the Luminors on a couple of times, too, but couldn't pull the trigger yet again. Guess what, my mind started wandering towards the Radiomir again ... so I went out again to try Radiomirs, and I slowly started to refine what I wanted a bit more, up to the point where I was sure I wanted a base logo, no seconds (753). And then someone offered me a good deal on a 380 (base logo, small seconds) which I couldn't refuse. In short: there's so many small details and variations and only so much money to spend, so it can be quite a journey to your destination. |

This is how it usually goes.
1. Luminor or Radiomir 2. Sandwich or sausage 3. Size preference 4. In house or ETA Then you’ll get into 1950s or Bettarini cases for luminor. 1940s or wire lug for radiomir. Just have to try them on and decide what you like. That 233 dot dial posted above ticks pretty much all the boxes for a modern Panerai. |

I should have never sold my 233. Such an amazing watch... especially the dot dial! And the price has come down lately, great value!

As everyone said; it’s best to limit your suggestions 1) State your budget, new or wilingness to buy preowned 2) crown guard or not My first Pam was a 233 dot. It’s a great modern Panerai and is a favorite amongst Rolex collectors as Panerai purists tend to gravitate toward simpler/cleaner dials. I loved it as it represented complications that don’t exist in time only/gmt rolexes. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

When in doubt... start with a base luminor, imo.

I’m new w the brand after taking a liking to them last year and had my eyes set on a few of the base models, then finally landed on a sandwich dial 111. The 111 seems to be the more popular pick in regards to a base model.

The only Pam I currently have is a 111. I absolutely love it. During the normal rotation, when it's the 111's turn, I always remember how much I like it and it stays on the wrist longer than others, lol. The only thing I don't like it not having a date complication. My first Pam was a 292 and it just never sang to me; I sold it shortly after buying.

I first got a 176, then a 232, and now I am thinking of getting a 24 or 25...
The first picture is my 176, the second my 232. |

I would choose a historic. Luminor Manual
Base PAM 000 , PAM 176 , PAM 112 , PAM 009 009 112 or Luminor Marina with seconds PAM 177 , PAM 004 , PAM 005 , PAM 001 005 177

Start at the beginning ... with the original Logo Base 000... Still one of the best in my opinion!

I went through quite a few different models, and the one that stick is the 510.
What's important to me are:
Some people like ETA movement better because of the ease for service. For me I put value on being in-house. And the series with in-house movement has other case and dial change that I prefer.

I love the 510. I’m between the 510 and the 233. The only thing that is putting me over the edge with the 233 is the domed crystal. Question. Are the 233s still in production? The ones I see for sell on WatchRecon are all early 2000s |
