The oyster perpetual is the quintessential basic Rolex, great watch, we have two Mrs Fett and myself. The Daytona is a really great watch, tried a friend's one on and I love it.
The problem is the price, £4500 against £10500.
What does the Daytona bring to the party for that great a difference?
It has been debated before and the consensus appeared to be that Rolex has only one level of quality unlike some watch companies that could be mentioned but I won't. So same quality both in house movements etc, all that's added is a chronograph function. So I conclude that one of them is priced incorrectly, is the OP underpriced of the Daytona overpriced?

I’ll go with the OP. Although the Daytona is nice, I’m not a fan of chronograph watches. I prefer a simple dial. There both Rolex watches, so quality is there.

“The problem is the price”.

No, there is no problem. This isn’t a value for money situation. It’s a perceived value situation. The market perceives and therefore believes one of those two watches is actually worth a lot more - more than even Rolex does. And they pay for it. The Daytona can be priced higher and will still sell. That drives some people crazy and that’s fine.

Is the Daytona “worth” the extra money? That is a question answerable only at the individual level.

For me, it’s not. I prefer the OP.

For others, obviously it is.

Looking at cost figures

I need some "reverse engineering" from retail to figure the approx. cost of each model.
took 3 models:
Airking
Daytona
SkyDweller

My calculated cost to the distributor:
Airking 3300 USD
Daytona 6600 USD
SkyDweller 7600 USD

My guess is that the main diff between the 3 hands to complication is not the finish but its the movement and its testing cost and maybe also the NRE involved in the movement development.

Me too, John. I love the OP. The observations about the Explorer vs. the OP is interesting and a valid discussion.

Do you have an answer to my question you quoted?

I went back and re-read your post and question.

I agree with you, I would imagine there is no company that offers different levels of quality within the same product at the same time.

Oh yeah!

At least where I’m from yes.

Regular people: Walmart

Fancied people: target

Well off people: Whole Foods

But obviously that is not strict or anything and a fancy/rich person could totally shop at Walmart their whole life

But that is the image that those stores give off to me and others that have told me the same thing !

I think you need to separate a) market value from b) aesthetic value/intangible factor.
If you’re looking at a) then obviously the Daytona is worth more than the OP, both because the movement is more complex, the dial has more elements, the clasp and PCLs make the bracelet more expensive and it’s a much more sought after watch that you can actually turn around and sell at significantly more than MSRP.
If however you’re only interested in b) then it becomes a purely subjective/emotional choice. I personally would always pick the OP over the Daytona and if someone offered me the choice between the two on condition that I can’t resell I would choose the OP all day long.
