FWIW I've no issue reading the dial at 68. I'm a freak though. Also I've always loved Chronos long before I knew of the Daytona. They've always attracted me so it's not the Daytona hype alone at least in my case. Finally, I might add that the more that hate them the better for the lovers!!!

Me personally, not so much the Chronograph part, but I cannot fathom or understand spending 30k on any watch with that OF band. .. just me though

I tried it on more than once and every time I find that it is too small to a point that it looks feminine. Could not do it. In terms of design and brand presence, my personal opinion is that there other chronographs that looks better and more presence or at least not anything less. Hype? Maybe ; )

I'm not sure, but did the hype/mystique surrounding the Daytona really take off when Paul Newman started wearing one?

dont like the daytona, dont really get it.. offered twice and turned down - black and white. like the older ones, but not the ceramic. prefer speedmaster. but for those that like it, no problems..

Daytona is hyped, because it's always been hyped. Hype begets more hype. Just like how Patek Nautilus is hyped like crazy. Daytona is to Rolex, as Nautilus is to Patek or Royal Oak is to AP. Daytona is the iconic Rolex.
This is similar to stock investing. Big winners tend to get more hyped up, and this begets more momentum. (think TSLA, SHOP) |

It's just that Rolex looks much better on slim dudes with slimmer wrist. (6.5-7 inches) For bigger men, with bigger wrist, AP looks way better than Rolex. It is all about your build, and style. For a big dude, a Daytona will look ridiculous on his wrist, as it will look like a kid toy stuck on a big guy. Conversely, an AP RO will just swallow a slim wrist. Slim guy = Rolex / Patek. Big guy = AP / Panerai / Omega. |

What’s the hype with Daytonas?
I find it interesting that this thread brought out people who prefer the metal bezel over the ceramic. My preference as well.
My story is that I always liked them, and never got one. When I was younger I really liked the Tag Carrera only because it reminded me of a Daytona, but was more affordable (also never got one). When I finally had enough to get a Daytona and get into the WIS game, I almost snagged a TT with a white face. Then I called an audible when I walked into an AP boutique and walked out with a 15202ST (before the hype). Since then I’ve sold it and sold some other Subs that I acquired along the way. I never picked up a Daytona due to the high premium and the discontinuation of the steel bezel. Fast forward about 5 years later I’m finally getting my Daytona! 116509 with the gray dial. It’s funny looking back to see how my taste changed over the years but in the end I’m going back to the original watch I wanted. I’ll post it up when it comes in from the AD in a few months. You say this, but you I'm going on a whim and saying that you have never owned a chronograph. Once you have one, you'll find yourself constantly timing every event that you can.

I still find it hard to read the time on these bad boys...even on a still photo!
Pretty watch though. To each their own. |

not gonna lie, biggest reason I love my Daytona is the incredible beauty of this timepiece. Daytona is the most stunning timepiece I've ever owned or laid my eyes on, aside from true exclusive / high end pieces from PP, AP, FPJ, etc. |

X2. Too hard to read the time, dial too busy, watch wears too small, 99% don't need/use the chronograph function, pushers break off easily on PM models. Need i keep going? If a generous person bought me one I would sell it and buy something else.

I admit I don't really use the chrono function with my Daytona, much at all. I suspect most chrono / Daytona owners don't really use chrono extensively. That being said, I view my Daytona as more of a jewelry that I really enjoy. With smartphones, smart watches, etc, nobody really "needs" a Rolex watch for functional reasons. |

What’s the hype with Daytonas?
Some people buy them because they like them while others just because its a model many desire!

While I respect the Daytona and it’s history, I have never had any interest in them and can’t see myself ever buying one. The dial is too busy and I don’t need/care much for chronographs of any brand.

What’s the hype with Daytonas?
Hype? Well since it’s popular, it’s what some choose to be relevant. You can typically distinguish a bandwagon rider from an actual enthusiast by asking them what they like about the watch besides the look and the brand.

My personal take on the Daytona is that it is hyped because it is the watch with the highest resale value.
When you read forums or articles, there is very little mention of the movement or the horology of it. It's always about Paul Newman, his watch which sold for a really high amount, and about the incredible resale value. Someone mentioned that the Daytona is not even a watch anymore; it's just a commodity to be traded. I'm starting to believe he's right. |

Honestly the Daytona was never on the top of the list for me when it came to Rolex. But it is without a doubt on my list. It’s the Daytona’s turn but there are no Daytona’s to be found at AD’s and have been waiting. Picked up a few others in the meantime while I wait endlessly. But eventually it will happen.

I liked the vintage Daytona's and the ceramics. After trying one on they are a perfect size. Plus the movement is arguably the best chronograph made today as far as reliability and performance.
With that said it isn't my top chronograph anymore. That goes to the re-issue Speedmaster 321. |

I've had six Daytonas and still have 4 . they're my favourite Rolex and fits my small wrist better than all of my other watches.
The Daytona was difficult to get your hands on long before the recent hype and is probably something only a real WIS would notice |

Didn't care for Daytona's until I tried one on.
