Which Patek Philippe Calatrava to buy?

considering selling or swapping my 16618 rolex sub for a calatrava, thoughts on this deal? have bought all the rolex i want looking to move into another brand, i wear a suit every day so it'll fit great.

is this really a special watch to wear? to be honest im mostly buying for the name. i prefer gold so if anyone could reccomend some references for me to check out that would be great

Welcome to the brand! I recommend the 5212 for the interesting dial, 5227 for the beautiful case and lug construction, or 5196 if you want something very classic and dressy. Recommend to try on your wrist first.

5196P or 5153G-012 are the ones I like best

In the current line up, the 5196P is the clear standout in my mind.

5296 sector dial. Classic look and versatile for all occasions without appearing too stuffy or formal.

It depends if you are looking for new or pre-owned. If you happen to visit a Patek AD, try on the 5227 (automatic) and the 5196 (manual wind). If going pre-owned, there are a lot of discontinued Calatravas available at reasonable prices. If you are near London, there are several pre-owned watch stores that carry Patek within a few blocks in Mayfair, where you should be able to try on a few watches.

There is a huge difference between a Sub and a Calatrava in how they wear on the wrist. It may take getting used to having a leather strap as well.

All great recommendations so far. I like the 5196p and 5227r. The 5296 sector dial is one of my favorites but may be harder to find new since it’s discont. I’m looking to add the 5212 which is pretty cool; only thing is it’s in SS.

My suggestion would be buy what you really love to look at on your wrist regardless of the brand. If you find that a PP Calatrava sings to you, so be it; if not, there's great options with VC, JLC, AP and others. If all else fails, wear your Sky-D which is amazing. Good luck in your search.

I would find a 5296 which recently went out of production.

I got bored of the 5711 very quickly but never get tired of looking at my 5196, it’s a piece of art

When I was shopping for a Calatrava quite a few years ago I found 5196, 5296, and 5227 all a little large on my wrist due to their empty and large dials. I am much happier with my little 3998 which has pretty much the same dial size as my 5711 despite being only 34mm.

out of the ones still in production, the 5196P is really a great piece.
but if you are wearing a suit everyday, then having to wound a watch everyday might be too much.
the 5926 in all colors and dials is a great watch. my personal favorite is the 5296R with clean dial or the 5296G with sector dial
