The Rolex DateJust (current model)

DateJust Reference Numbers:

Date of production:
The Rolex Date Just was introduced in 1945 as model 4467 and was to become the Flagship of the Rolex Line until the Day Date unseated it a decade later. The DateJust is still in production.

It was initially introduced as the DateJust Jubilee, however, the Jubilee title somehow only became associated with the bracelet. Originally offered in a coin edged version, the fluted bezel came along shortly afterward in 1957.

Some milestones for the DJ:
. 1954.... Introduction of the cyclops
. 1956.... First time another braclet besides the Jubilee offered (Oyster, Jubilee, or strap)
. 1957.... Offered in Stainless Steel
. 1962.... Introduction of the Two Tone models

The Two Tone Datejust has remained largely unchanged (aesthetically) for the past ~60 years and is probably the most copied watch ever introduced.

The Datejust had a movement change from the 16013 to 16233 to 28.8 bps, this was considered a major upgrade at the time since the new movement came with a sapphire crystal.

datejust updates

I was browsing around and came across a post listing all the improvements in the datejust model over the years... Perhaps someone has this bookmarked?

Thanks

Also, is the crown on TT datejust models solid gold?

I think the best improvement is the synthetic crystal and not the "domed" plexiglass.
The crown, the bezel, the bracelet middle links, everything that is gold looking is solid 18k gold.

When I bought my DJ 12 yrs ago, after they adjusted the band, they handed me these tiny gold links that they had taken out and told me that it was worth about $300.

The new DJ's look fine. They're getting pretty funky with the dials though.....

Are DJ dials interchangeable?, i.e. will a dial from a modern Datejust 116234 fit an older 16220

Here's my Z Series 116200 DJ, purchased in June. I love the Oyster bracelet and smooth bezel.

Thanks. This is the 3rd Datejust I've owned, and I will keep it for the reasons you've indicated. My previous 2 DJ's were older 16220's and they both had Jubilee bracelets and machined turned bezels (not the smooth one that is on my current DJ in the photo). I bought my previous DJ's, wore them for about a year each, and then sold them. When I saw my current DJ at the AD, I knew that the Oyster bracelet and smooth bezel combination is the cleanest DJ to own.

Anyone have a solid list of dial choices for the DJ with pix? I've gone mad trying to get the official Rolex website to work faster than a snail.

???

I had a DJ from the mid 80's- loved the thick look of acrylic crystal; however, it scratched quite easily. I have yet to put a single scratch on my sapphire.

Factory Jubilee style bracelets have 18k solid links. This is what comes with your 2005 DJ 16233. After-market bracelets, sometimes comes plated but most custom-made Italian gold bracelets are also solid gold.

Post some pictures when you get it so we can admire your DJ.

great thread. thanks.

i have been thinking of getting a datejust with jubilee bracelet recently. either new or pre-owned, depends on what deal i can get, not too fussed.

quick questions -

is there anything i need to know when looking at a new one and a pre-owned one??

do they have different movements over the years?

whats the mai difference between a Date and a DateJust?

is a jubilee bracelet a "more appropriate" bracelet for the Datejust than the oyster bracelet?

what are the main differences between the clasp bracelet and the new hidden bracelet in jubilee style?

i have tried 2 new DateJusts yesterday, one with the hidden and the other with clasp bracelet, both SS models. the one i prefer has a white roman dial with the hidden clasp.

thanks in advance.
