Being a Millionaire

In the past, it was a milestone.

I remember thinking with awe about aspiring to be a millionaire.

Now apparently it is pretty common. 1 out of every 20 Americans.

Wow.

Mostly due to real estate that has quadrupled in worth past 10 years. If you owned, your probably a millionaire in Southern California.

Like all statistics, I would contest the accuracy. Even if it were true, which I don't believe, a million bucks doesn't mean what it used to.

One of the main reasons was also in the computer biz. When I lived in San Jose in the 90, there was something like a new billionaire and 20 millionaires created every week.

And that spun the housing market out of control where a shack in Palo Alto could run you over a million with multiple bidders. Now that number is even higher.

With farmland at $6k to $12k per acre, almost every farmer is a millionaire on paper.

Being a millionaire in rural Texas, or Mississippi, or Wyoming is a whole lot different than being a millionaire in Manhattan, SF Bay Area, coastal LA, Seattle, Chicago, Boston, etc.

Kinda like if Jeff Bezos or Bill Gates lost $3B of their net worth, their reaction to that happening would be a WHOLE LOT different than if Oprah Winfrey lost $3B.......

Did you pick up the Van Winkle or the monkey? Every Crown Vic owner should have both.

Nice thing about the USA is low cost of living. Relatively cheap housing, food, clothing, cars, gas... Taxes still lower than Europe, where 20% VAT is normal

One odd aspect is how some jobs pay arbitrarily well. for example, beach lifeguards in Orange County making $150K+ per year

Wow, I never would've guessed it was that much. Obviously a very important job so I'm glad to see they're taken care of for all they do out there.

Agreed...

Say you win a Talent Show or the Lottery ...

$1,000,000.00 in Winnings

-$400,000.00 40% in State & Federal Taxes
-$100,000.00 10% in Gifting to Family or Tithing to Church
-$350,000.00 for a Modest Home if you can even get one for that
-$50,000.00 for New Car

In 1 day you are down to $100K ... then you pay off some debt, take a couple vacations and your out of money already!

I used to think of all the things I would buy if I were a millionaire....and now, I don't even want any of those things.
