Old car/ rust advice

Have an old Honda which bought V cheap nearly 8 years ago - £1200

Still running well & no advisory’s on the last mot. Apart from servicing/ tyres/ brakes & a new reconditioned starter motor - the car runs hassle free. However after 2 years of nursing one of the back wheel arches with polish - it’s finally broken our big time. If the car was giving me problems - i’d Just scrap it but it’s running ok & does me fine as a run around & commuter to train station

Taken it to 2 body shops - both have said uneconomical to repair based on age of car & both have said i’d Be better to do a repair myself. Business must be good for these guys when Turning away business

Anyway was going to giving it a go over next few weeks. Anyone done anything like this themselves??? My thoughts were

Mask off
Light sandpaper
Slabbed with black hammerite to slow the spread of the rust

Do that every 6 months and you are fine.

You can slow the rust down with something like POR-15 but the only real fix is to cut it out and put in new metal.

Most shops won't do the work because the labor cost, time, and materials would scare away customers.

There are solutions that can convert the rust, but you need to grind or sand-blast it down, treat it, use filler to build the surface back up, and prime/re-paint.

You could cut out the rust and weld in new metal if you have the talent.

Does the panel bolt on, maybe just buy one and do it yourself, there are lots of aftermarket panels,

rust never goes unless its gone.

Or just buy another old toyota or honda.

Yeah - that’s what both body shops said - cutting away metal/ replacing metal & then paint. Neither seemed interested in doing a repair as they couldn’t guarantee their work even when I mentioned l’d take a receipt with no guarantee stamped on it

Thanks jocke - will wait till next good weather weekend & give it a go ;.)

Best way would be to cut out and introduce new arches

However if you don't care what the car looks like.
Sand it down, then apply Hammerite K rust treatment, get it from Halford's
Then paint with Hammerite paint, Mask it off nicely and have black shadow wheel spats.

Or get some stick on spats and just cover it up......

POR-15 is a great product also.

Sandblast it yourself, take to a shop and have them throw on the filler and shoot the rear quarter again.

However, with Honda, depending on the year, they can have a rubbery material for sound deadening behind the metal, which also holds water and rust. The only long term thing is to do a partial quarter panel replacement.

Thanks guys for all for the advise

Masked off the area
Treated the rust with hammerite ku rust treatment x 2 applications
Then applied one coat smooth hammerite black metal paint

See how it goes. Certainly looks better than the rusty arch & hopefully slows down any further deterioration (as long as possible).

You need to drop the bumper off and do along where the panel meets the top of the bumper. It won't be long till that goes to. Not a nice word to use but rust is the cancer of cars
