Apple Scam: Be Careful Out There

I just got off the phone with a “representative” from Apple.

And the intersting part is that my caller ID says, Apple.

Long story short there have allegedly been 25-35 login attempts from Russia. So they asked if I was traveling.

I said no and asked what I needed to do.

I had to jump on a laptop and login and allow them access so that they could triangulate the signal and shut it down. This is apparently the only way I can protect myself from these hackers.

Obviously I hung up. But this was scarily real and realistic. It was done very professionally.

I figured it was worth posting. The more we know, the better prepared we are.

Apple Scam: Be Careful Out There

I got a call. Didn’t answer. But they left a voicemail for me to call back the Apple representative right away. I figured it was a scam.

Useful to know, they’re getting more clever all the time. Here in the uk we’re getting similar from bank, except they hack the phone line, encourage you to phone the police but it’s still the hacker on the line.

I figure anything and everything is a scam these days. Unless I initiated contact, or I’m expecting contact, I hang up on everything and delete every email.

It's called spoofing - that is how your called ID shows you "Apple". But yes, the bastards are getting better by the day. I get weekly calls from scammers, don't usually answer unknown numbers. If they want to reach me, they can leave a message.

Its funny. Or not.

But I’m starting to think along the same lines. Sad.

Bastards.

It was the Apple caller I’d that gave it a modicum of credibility.

I was skeptical the entire time.

But as soon as they asked me to login, I knew for certain it was a scam. Thanked them for their time and hung up.

I started getting this scam a month or two back. Never got baited. Apple does not reach out to their customers.

I’ve actually had service done recently on a warranty item.

Sometimes they do call. They called me then to tell me it was ready.

Actually customer service generally so bad, that any time you get a call, it generally is a scam

Haven't gotten anything from Apple but I get this call a lot where the power company calls and says a technician is on their way to cut my power because of late payments and that if I don't right away then my power will get shut off.

I once responded, "I don't care, cut my power"
and the representative got triggered and went off on me " you don't care about your business? You want me to cut your power right now? I'll do it!"

lol

Good point! I think I meant more randomly or out of the blue. There’s an eBay scam much like this one. I almost got had a few years back. I hate scammers. What is crazy about the Apple one is that it does show Apple or something very believable on caller ID. Very sophisticated. Apple has the bucks and power to stop this one, surprised they haven’t.

Funny story. My friend got a call today from a number he didn’t know. He answered and said don’t call this number again. What he didn’t know was his brother got a new phone today with a new number and that’s who was calling him. Lol

Have not had this one yet. Get the tax scam call several times a week. Latest is endless calls trying to "sell" health exchange plans. I only answer calls from people in my contact list anymore. I block the callers but they just rotate numbers. I get about 10 a week. Sucks.

I got that call months ago. Here's a fast way to determine if it's a scam. Tell them you are on your Apple Computer and ask if you should open Internet Explorer. They will say "yes" and want to give you the Website address. The thing is though, Internet Explorer doesn't exist for or work on Apple devices/laptops/desktops, so if it were really Apple they'd tell you to open Safari. Or maybe Google/Firefox, but certainly not IE.

Very common.

I had the Indian apple scammers calling me non stop for about a week last year.

Same situation with the caller ID saying apple.

Lots of people fall for it unfortunately.

Thanks for sharing this. I will let my wife know. She's the Apple human, I'm the everything-else-other-than-Apple human.

If they call while I'm in the middle of something, I just hang up.

But if I have free time, I do like to screw with them. Sometimes it's very easy to get them to lose their composure.

Exactly, leave me a voicemail if you really need to talk to me. 99% of all calls are just hangups.

Your scam emails go to my junk folder, never see them, they get automatically deleted.
