Mercedes G63 AMG

Hey guys,

I have been interested in a G Wagon for quite awhile and have an opportunity to pick one up today.

I've never driven one and am looking for some feedback before making the trek to the dealership to check it out.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Experience?

Thanks,

JPS

My friend's dad had one, I think a 2014 or 2015 model. He said it rode too stiff and wasn't comfortable to drive so they went with the regular G550 and got an SL63 AMG to cover the AMG side.

A good friend had one ... he ended up trading it for a RR Autobiography. He said it was too stiff and too much attention.

But now he's looking at getting a used Bentley Bentayga, so I need to call him out on the "too much attention" aspect.

What year?

Makes a big difference.

They are all great. But the 2019 is completely redone. And incredible.

It's a 2019- fully loaded. Only issue is that it is cardinal red. I haven't seen it in person yet.

Cardinal Red is beautiful if you like red cars. A client of mine has a ‘19 Cardinal Red parked next to her ‘17 Orange G65. The refresh looks good but still a G wagon.

Absolutely incredible car. They did an incredible job.

And cardinal red is actually very subtle for a red car.

I say go for it.

Totally pointless vehicle. I’d go with the G550.

Just googled the cardinal red and it is stunning. Looks like they don’t even have it for the ‘18 or ‘17. Must be new color model. I would go try it out see if you like it. Maybe lease it? I don’t know how reliable they are. Plus when you lease your not obligated to keep it after the 3 years or however long the term is. Might be a nice experience.

Ha. Cmon. So many pointless things. Including high end watches.

That said, I’d go for the 550 too. My wife is lobbying hard for one. I’m into it too. After all, I’d get to drive it a lot.

But I’m not ready for that financial commitment just yet.

I know, I’m just really critical when it comes to cars.

The G Wagon was designed to be a no nonesense, utilitarian off road vehicle. The G63 is literally the opposite. And it just doesn’t make much sense. Who wants to drive a big box with a rough suspension and a huge motor? I don’t think it’s very fun to drive. The only reason why these things exist is to show off to other people.

But with the new design, I don’t know if they’ve refined the G. 99% of buyers will never use them for their intended purpose so I would not blame Mercedes for changing things up. Are these things even body on frame trucks anymore? Do they still have 3 locking differentials?

If you don’t care about that stuff, I think a GLS63 is a much nicer choice.

It's a lot plusher than the older model, but still not Range Rover smooth.

If you can pick it up at retail, DO IT. They're going for $50k over sticker here.

I have a 2018 G63 and love it...see pic. Personally I love the "truck" feel and the stiffness. The 2019 is a different vehicle entirely, designed with better drivability and more tech. It is not however for everyone, if you want supple and luxurious, RR may be the way to go even with the improvements made. The misconception is that is that it's an SUV, it's not, it's a truck. You will get attention but so what, if you enjoy it go for it. There is nothing like it in the world. No regrets here, I will likely keep this one.

I personally love the model you’re looking at, but have never driven the 63 model. That’s a lot of engine!

They still have locking diffs, front, rear, and center.

I drove a 17 550 for a weekend.

I loved every minute of it.

My dealer has offered me a few 19’ at list. Admittedly they were not ideal builds. Allocations are over list.

I am a big fan of this car. But it’s a true statement. It’s saying:

Yes. I have ridiculous money. And I want you to know it.

This thing stands out. Everywhere. I like that about it. I just don’t have the money to back it up.

This one is growing on me.

Edit: I don’t have the money for this either. Starting at 124k. Krioke.

I am going to see it tomorrow at 6:30 AM. I’m looking forward to driving it. I’ve never owned a Red car before, but this may be a good place to start. I love the black accents it has. Truthfully, this would be a lot of car for me. I’d likely lease it. Guess I have some things to consider.

That lease payment would be what?

About $4,000 a month?

That’s insanity.

Haven’t seen the number yet.

I’m not very knowledgeable on buying vs leasing to be honest. I’ve always leased my higher end cars though.

Don’t lease this car that would be ridiculous.
It holds value like no other, you can basically drive for free if you own it outright.
