1973 Submariner, tell me more.

I saw my grail watch yesterday. I was privileged to see and hold a 1973 Sub no date just back from RSC service. It was amazing! I’ve been looking of one similar as I was born in 1973. What are the prices on a beauty like this? And could anyone tell me more about Submariners from around that time?

Thanks!

Well, Submariners of that time came in two flavors. The chronometer version, the 5512, and the non-chrono 5513.

Both used 15xx movements, the 5513 a 1520 and a 1570 for the 5512. Both would have had bi-directional friction fit bezels and possessed matt/tritium dials.

Many collectors consider the 5512/13 the iconic "tool watch" with everything you need and nothing you don't.

Because of it's lesser numbers the 5512 is considered the more collector's piece (of course depending on year, dial, etc...)

I think they're great.

Mine, a bit later, 6.04 mil MK III maxi,

1973 was a fantastic year - as I was born then too!!
I've been looking at finding a nice model from '73 also - the 5513 looks favorite.

I just missed one a few days ago here in the U.K, a 5513 from '73 - just under £3k ($6,000) and it needed a trip to RSC to bring it back to its former glory.
