How do you value a Ltd edition

So IWC made a watch for our squadron, we had to buy them (mega discount)but that’s bye the bye. I’ve been asked for a value by my insurance company but how’d you go about it. I know brand/desirability plays a major factor but how can you price it.

Was it a ltd edition in that is was a serial edition that had a marking or some sort of inscription on the dial? If so I would look on Chrono at the value of the serial edition watch and go from there. Unless its something like a Rolex Comex or a Patek Tiffany thats probably the closest for value.

You may get short shrift here asking for a valuation, but I’d look online for a military specialist; perhaps a specialist auction house.

It was limited in as much as the dial is unique to our squadron and only 20 were produced.

The case back is engraved and personalised

And it was supplied in unique packaging

I totally get value-what so one is prepared to pay but I need to have a figure for insurance

Totally understand that but I’m not looking to sell, just genuine advice.

That’s a tough one. Do you have a contact at IWC that your squadron used? I would reach out to them and inquire about what replacement cost would be in the event of a loss. That should give you a good idea if it’s even possible.

Hard to compare to anything on the market in this case given this is pretty much a one off.

Wow that is super cool! Argh this is a tough one since Im guessing you want to insure it.... I'd say its worth ALOT.. especially to you. Its a great looking piece and Im sure the sentimental value is high. Talk to the insurer and see if you can assign a value... the premiums will be spicy but if its worth it

Yes the CEO, unfortunately he told us they will never make another, not even to replace a lost/stolen one.

I would have it professionally appraised with the rarity and significance noted and valued in that regard.

Cool watch btw

I think it’s insurance value would be its msrp for the non-limited version since as you said you can’t replace the limited (your) version. If you are unsure , then bring to an appraiser and get official appraisal.

These kinds of customised limited runs are in the main very common. Unless the organisation has wider public appeal, watches such as this are only valuable to the owners and perhaps future members of the organisation. Therefore, the "market" value is probably the retail cost of the retail version of the watch LESS a discount because it is not the retail version of the watch. However, the value to you will be significantly different. You would at a minimum want to get your money back if it was loss-damaged, lost or stolen, but preferable obtain a replacement if that was at all possible.

The person who arranged the customisation might be able to find out if a one watch production re-run was possible and what the cost of that might be. Would have been difficult many years ago, but these days with computer driven manufacturing might not be anymore difficult than getting another custom shirt embroidered with already existing artwork.

Very cool watch! I would insure it for what you think it would take to replace via hodinkee. Let’s say you paid 3k but to replace it with something similar it’s 9k. I would insure it for 5k with chubb via Hodinkee. Obviously you can’t get another like it but it would be nice to have something if it gets stolen or lost.

That's impossible to say. Just to write a number, you can double or triple the MSRP of the base model.

It’s irreplaceable unless he mugs one of his squadron mates ..
