After seeing the Basel releases I am resuming to my favorite place on TRF...here!
Not a single new model IMO that leaned a bit towards Vintage Rolex...besides maybe the red text on the new 43mm! Sea-Dweller...: )
From my perspective there is a strong vintage trend now and prices are constantly increasing, even for previous mass produced models like 1601...why isn't Rolex picking up on this trend? Or am I just getting to old? : ) |

Interesting to see that Omega released 3 commemorative re-issues at Basel World.

I really want to like some of the modern Rolexes, including the 2017 releases, but they don't do much for me at all. The new SD at 43mm with a cyclops? No, thanks. The red text ain't nearly enough to make it appealing, IMHO.
The only modern Rolex I like is the BLNR GMT. That's a handsome watch, despite the PCLs. Everything else, including the Daytona-C, doesn't interest me much. And I've owned a couple of them. I'm sticking with anything acrylic! |

I think the Sea Dweller is actually attractive with a nod towards its vintage roots. The red text and minute track bezel look good to me, the cyclops not so much. I wonder if it's possible to order it without a cyclops? Retails for 11k, I imagine they will be tough to find.

I love vintage rolexes and i would prefer Rolex to not modernize vintage references, or in your words to pick up on this trend ... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I doubt you could order the new SD without the cyclops, but perhaps it could be removed like on other sapphire models. Still, perhaps it's a new type of crystal with the cyclops actually part of the crystal and not just glued on. We'll find out soon enough, because there'll certainly be guys trying to do that. |

I think a faithful 're-issue' would be quite a nice addition, but I doubt they'll ever do it.

I agree. The vintage hunt continues for me.

as a vintage nut, I'm perhaps in the minority, but Im on the list for the new 43mm SD:
am digging the DUALITY of both, 'vintage cues' (cyclops, red line) + modern appointments (ceramic insert, bigger size). its not a replacement for a vintage Rolex, rather a complement to a vintage Rolex. Im looking forward to add it to the rotation. |

100% agree, but are we bias. When ever a new release by Rolex appears I find myself comparing it to the classics. Maybe to a new generation these watches are appealing, I don't know. On a side note I love omega's and adore the speedmaster but god I hate omega. Seems every time someone looks into space omega feel they must release a limited edition watch to commemorate the occasion. I would love to know exactly how many limited edition speedys have been released. I just feel enough is enough and let the speedy just be the speedy. A great watch with rich heritage.

Omega killed it with those three homage pieces IMO....especially the Railmaster....I will own one but Rolex' new offerings aren't anything to write home about with the exception of that Cellini Moonphase...super bummed about the changes made to the SD...oh well, life goes on

One of the reasons that Cartier occupies the place it does in the jewelry pantheon is that every piece is recognizably, well, Cartier. When Rolex holds true to this, the design team is at its best. That's why I love the design of the Oysterquartz: it is true to the earlier Viceroy and Observatory models. The new Air-King is an example: totally new, but clearly Rolex, whether you love or hate it. We forget that for every "iconic" design, there were also many "also-rans", justly shrouded by the mists of time. Many, many boring Rolex through the decades: they make the others stick out. Imagine a giant version (40-43mm) of the Zephyr. If they maintained the slim profile that makes the Zephyr a classic, I'd be very interested, but there is room to make the dial unique.
