Greetings from the Olde Worlde.

Hello to everybody out there in Rolex land. My site name is "Gugnunc" (real name Philip) and if any of you can recognize the derivation of this site name then I shall be very surprised indeed! You need to be of a certain age and, possibly, nationality! I am a retired chemist living in Norfolk (England) and my interests are :- Motorcycling - used to own a B.M.W. but this got to be too heavy so was traded for a Honda, aviation history -used to hold a P.P.L., English history and , of course, watches.
I joined this site to find out something about my Rolex Explorer which was bought for my 21st birthday in 1965!!!. You people really are a nice and knowledgable bunch and I was at once given everything that I had hoped for - even turns out the watch is something of a rarity and likely to be more valuable than I had thought, although I don't expect that I will ever sell it.
Am I allowed to say that I admire other makes of watch too? I reckon one of the most underrated manufacturers is Seiko - their value for money is second to none and I am currently wearing one of their mechanical models with a 6R15 movement whose performance I would not have believed had I not measured it myself. Enough for now - talk later, I hope.

Hello again and thank you all for your messages of welcome. Being very new around here I am probably going to make suggestions and ask questions which have appeared on this site many times before - so please bear with me.
Anyway here goes with number one: I am planning to produce a small collection of watches which reflect most of the watchmaking technology which is available at this time, and I expect it to comprise the following:

Hand-wound mechanical.
Automatic (self-winding) mechanical.
Battery operated quartz.
Automatic (self-winding) quartz, i.e Seiko kinetic.
Radio-controlled quartz.
Solar powered quartz.

Now I already have my Explorer and my Seiko 6R15, so the automatic mechanical is taken care of - in duplicate. I also own several "standard" i.e. Battery-operated quartz items so that too is covered. I don't see any problem in obtaining the kinetic, radio-controlled and solar models, what I do have a problem with is the hand-winding piece. The reason I foresee a problem is that I am aiming for reasonable quality with the items which I have yet to buy, but without going over the top in terms of price; therefore I have given myself a limit of about £150 (say $220) for any individual item which will, I think, meet these terms of reference - except in the case of the hand-wound. There don't seem to be too many new examples of these around which aren't either way above my budget (i.e. the real topnotch makes) or look as if they might be cheap and nasty - I am thinking of the Russian Vostoks here, am I being unfair to a decent quality item or am I correct in thinking that the price will reflect the quality? Even the suppliers state that they may reasonably be expected to last up to ten years if carefully used! I have also been looking at the Swiss-made recreations of the GI watches of the Vietnam era - lots of advice needed please.
I know that I have missed out one significant piece of technology which is the spring-drive, but the cost of these puts them way outside the limits which I have set myself.

Finally it seems to be something of a tradition on this site to end with a quotation, well this is one of my favourites: "The older I get the more clearly I can remember things which never actually happened" I am sure that it is attributed to a U.S. General of World War II era......................................or am I?
